Ozark graduate

Dustin Hayes, the son of Larry and Betty Hayes of Emporia, graduated Saturday from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Mo. He received a bachelor degreee in biblical literature.

Hayes is employed at the college in the information technology center and at radio station KOBC.

Headed to Iraq

Tech Sgt. Kyle Lyon, nephew of Kim Dodge of Emporia, will deploy May 25 for Balad, Iraq for a five-month tour of duty. Lyon, of Ray City, Ga., is a Flight Line Expeditor with the 723 AMXS/41HMU Squadron, based at Moody Air Force Base at Valdosta, Ga.

Lyon is a 1992 graduate of Yates Center High School, and has been in the Air Force for 14 years, previously stationed in Korea and Albuquerque. He lives in Ray City with his wife Patti, daughter Kieley, and son Aaron.

He is the son of Kelly and Carol Lyon of Yates Center.

Hopkins scholars

Hopkins Manufacturing Corp. has announced the recipients of the Hopkins Scholarship for the 2007-2008 school year. The scholarship rewards employees or dependent children of employees of Hopkins and the Carrand Cos. who exemplify a high standard of quality and excellence in their educational endeavors; students that best represent the attitude and work ethic of Hopkins’ employees. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship. This years winners from Emporia are Kendra Cain and Tyler Ast.

Kendra D. Cain attended Flint Hills Technical College in Emporia and is working at Newman Hospital and Holiday Resort as a certified nurse’s aide. She is planning to attend Flint Hills Tech to obtain her degree as a licensed practical nurse. She graduated with a 3.88 GPA and honors from Emporia High School. She is the daughter of David Cain, safety and security coordinator for Hopkins in Emporia.

Tyler Ast is a student at Emporia High School with a 3.53 GPA who volunteers as a tutor and participates in extracurricular activities such as football, basketball and baseball. He plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue a degree in civil engineering. He is the son of Jim Ast, molding set-up technician at Hopkins in Emporia.

Outstanding senior

Rebekah Swafford of Emporia is one of 16 graduating seniors in the College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University to receive and Outstanding Senior Award.

Swafford, a 2003 graduate of Emporia High School, is receiving a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She is a member of the National Scholars Honor Society and the National Dean’s List. She also is a K-State honors list student. She has been president of the Early Childhood Education Interest Group and has worked at the Hoeflin Stone House Child Care Center.

Swafford plans to attend graduate school at K-State.

She is the daughter of Dwight and Pam Swafford.
