Peabody

A Peabody landmark fell victim to progress recently, ending a history of hot and cold treats alike.

The Peabody Gazette-Bulletin reported that the Dari Creme had operated an ice cream shop/restaurant for decades. Middlecreek Mining Inc. of Peabody purchased the tract of land to expand its Ninth Street property. The building was pulled down in less than five minutes.

Marion

There will be a new event during Marion’s Chingawassa Days, Marion’s Amazing Race, which will be sponsored by the Marion County Historical Museum. The Marion County Record reported that the event will be based on the popular reality television show, in which two-person teams follow clues in a race for a million dollars. First place in Marion’s Amazing Race is $100, second place is $75 and third place is $50. The race will be on June 2. The entry fee is $25 per two-person team.

The Marion Lions Club will sponsor its 13th annual car show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 during Chingawassa Days. The club previously had hosted the event on the first Saturday in May. Low attendance prompted the organization to consider a different date.

Car show participants can pre-register for the car show and purchase a Chingawassa Days button by May 25 for $18, a savings of $12.

Strong City

The Strong City City Council discussed a request from Roadhouse Bar and Grill co-owner Keth Nelson at the May 8 city council meeting.

The Chase County Leader-News reported that Nelson requested, at the April 10 council meeting, permission to add a beer garden to the restaurant on the first Sunday of each month and on rodeo weekend.

The council noted a policy should be in place for this request and for future requests of a similar nature. City Attorney Doug Jones recommended the council establish a firm policy before allowing the activity.

Cottonwood Falls

The American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Community Building in Swope Park. Donors must be in general good health, weigh 100 pounds or more and be at least 17 years old.
