Camp of Champions basketball camps
Emporia State head women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider will be conducting five Camp of Champions basketball camps for both girls and boys grades Kindergarten-12 this summer. ESU assistants Ali Sprague and Jory Collins, as well as ESU players and local high school and junior college coaches also will be coaching at the camp.
Camps will be held in Burlington on June 4-6, Eureka on June 13-14, Emporia on June 18-21, Parsons on June 25-28 and Holton on July 16-18. The cost of the camp varies by location: Burlington is $100, Eureka is $70, Emporia is $125, Parsons is $125 and Holton is $100. Fees include instruction, camp basketball, camp T-shirt and secondary accident insurance.
The camp schedule begins with registration from 8:30-9 a.m. on the first day of each session. Then, from 9 a.m. to noon, campers will be taught individual instruction with ball handling, shooting, fundamentals and defense. After an hour lunch break, campers will return for more individual instruction plus shooting competitions and 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games from 1-4 p.m.
Applications for Burlington are due May 28, for Eureka on June 4, for Emporia on June 8, for Parsons on June 15 and for Holton on July 6.

Emporia Aquatic Club summer season
The summer swim season for the Emporia Aquatic Club will begin May 29 at the Jones Aquatic Center pool and finish with a meet in Emporia on July 14-15.
The Emporia Aquatic Club is a multi-age group to help swimmers develop and refine their competitive swimming skills. Morning practices will be held from 7-8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and evening practices will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Legion baseball
tryouts approaching
Emporia American Legion Baseball tryouts are approaching.
Tryouts for both the “AAA” and the 15 and 16 “A” teams will be held this Saturday and Sunday. The “AAA” tryouts will take place from noon-3 p.m. at Soden’s Grove, with the “A” tryouts for the 15- and 16-year-old teams will immediately follow from 3-5 p.m.
However, should the Emporia High baseball team qualify for the State tournament, the tryout dates will be moved back to May 27 — noon-3 p.m. for “AAA” tryouts and 3-5 p.m. for “A” tryouts. According to Kansas State High School Activities Association rules, any player still participating in high school baseball cannot participate in tryouts until the season is over.
An information form will need to be filled out at the time of the tryouts, and a copy of the player’s original birth certificate also will need to be produced for certification. However, if a player has previously played Legion baseball in Emporia, a birth certificate will not be needed.
2nd-Annual Women
in the Outdoors Event
Registration is now being accepted for the Second-Annual Camp Alexander Women in the Outdoors Event, which will take place June 1-2 at Camp Alexander in Emporia.
Activities offered at the camp will include: archery, rifle marksmanship, canoe basics, river canoeing, river mud slide, outdoor cooking, barefoot hiking, outdoor meditation, fly fishing, pond fishing, bee keeping, decoy setup, personal safety and self defense, nature’s spa, outdoor first aid and health care, shot-gunning, mountain biking, disc golf, team building to go, fur harvesting, limb lining, game calling, camp fire programs, milk crate climbing, bird dog workshop, outdoor photography, orienteering, survival and first aid and CPR.
The registration fee is $55. A mother-daughter special of $75 is available is the daughter is between the ages of 10-19. There is a $5 discount for bringing a friend to register. Other fees apply for special classes, and sponsorships are available.
Registration fee includes six hours of instruction, use of all equipment and supplies (except where additional fees are required), a subscription to Women in the Outdoors Magazine, Friday night social, and breakfast, lunch and refreshments throughout the day on Saturday.

Flint Hills Catbackers golf tournament
The Flint Hills Catbackers will hold a scholarship golf tournament this Saturday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Tournament.
The tournament will be a four-person scramble format, with cash prizes, hole-in-one contests, mulligans and more. The fee is $70 per person.

Hillsboro Festival Run
1-mile walk/run and 5K
The Hillsboro Recreation Commission is accepting entries for the Hillsboro Festival Run that is set to take place at 8 a.m. on May 26th.
The event will begin at the Hillsboro Visitors Center located in Memorial Park at the corner of D and Birch Streets in Hillsboro. Entrants can choose to participate in the 1-mile walk/run or the 5-kilometer run.

Track Club seeking
interested athletes
The Emporia Track Club is a non-profit organization that provides track and field/running opportunities for all ages with an emphasis on youth. The focus is on instructional learning and enjoyment of the sport. The Emporia Track Club sponsors youth meets in track and field and cross country, fun runs and conducts youth clinics. The track club also has competitors travel to regional and national meets to compete successfully at the highest level.
Designed for competitive athletes who desire to compete in out-of-town USATF competition, the club is open to grades 1-12 at the middle school track. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. for grades 1-8, and for grades 9-12, practices begin June 5. Starting June 5, the club will practice Monday through Thursday at 7 p.m. on the middle school track.

Optimist Junior Golf
Championships
Entries are now open for the 2007 Kansas District Optimist Junior Golf Championships, sponsored by Optimist clubs throughout the state.
The finals will be held in Salina on June 14. Awards are given in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions for the following age groups: 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, and 16-18.
All age group winners, as well as other top-placing golfers, qualify for the OIJGC International Championship Tournament held in July at the famous PGA National Resort & Spa in West Palm Beach, Fla., home of the PGA Honda Classic.
The Kansas District of Optimist International will sponsor the four age group winners in 14-18-year-old divisions to the Florida Tournament. Boys 14-18 must participate in a pre-qualifier prior to the Salina State Championship.
Pre-qualifying tournaments will be held at the following locations:
• May 30 — Derby, Hidden Lakes GC
• June 4 — Topeka, Lake Shawnee
• June 5 — Olathe, Heritage Park
• June 6 — Salina, Salina Municipal
The entry fee for players 14-18 years of age is $50. Boys and girls from 10-13 years of age pay a reduced entry fee of $30.

Emporia summer
basketball programs
Registration is now being accepted for the Emporia Basketball Summer Camps and Emporia Basketball Summer Leagues held at Emporia High School and coordinated by EHS boys basketball coach Rick Bloomquist.
There are nine different programs to choose from ranging from the Shooter Extreme Mini Camp to the Summer League.
