Lyon County’s five-year plan for the road and bridge department was approved during a special session of Lyon County commission Wednesday morning.
Chip Woods, Lyon County engineer, summarized the plan to commissioners and the public during the hearing. The plan includes the South Avenue Improvement Project and three bridge replacements in Lyon County: Road 130 over Coal Creek; Road 310 on Allen Creek a half mile east of Americus Road; and over Duck Creek on Road L north of U.S. Highway 56.
Woods explained to the public that the five-year plan is a plan for using federal aid dollars that are earmarked for the county’s use for improvement projects.
“We look at bridges that are too big for us to build ourselves with our crew,” Woods said.
Woods said the county is required to provide a five-year plan each year as a way for the state to utilize the funds on a state level.
“If other counties don’t utilize their funds, we can take advantage of that,” Woods said. “We can actually advance (projects) a year or two ahead so they (state) don’t lose funds at the state-wide level.”
After the public hearing was closed a motion to approve the five-year plan was approved on a 3-0 vote. Commissioner Bob Davis moved to approve the plan. Commissioner Scott Briggs seconded the motion.
Also during Wednesday’s commission meeting commissioners discussed the purchase of a survelliance system in the commission area office. The system will allow monitoring of the front desk area, which is unmanned at times. It will allow monitoring of who is coming in the door. Commissioners put the item on today’s agenda.
