Publications board
Andrew Roland of Emporia was among five Washburn University students named to the board of student publications for the 2007-08 academic year. Roland is a sophomore and is the business manager. He is a public administration major with a concentration in non-profit management.
Soil judging
Kansas State University’s Soil Judging Team won second place at the 2007 National Soil Judging Contest in Logan, Utah.
Paul Hartley of Emporia placed third in individual honors. Hartley is a junior in agronomy.
Teams from 22 universities competed in the national contest, which was in mid-April. Two K-State team members placed in the top 10 in individual honors out of 84 contestants.
The team’s faculty coach is Mickey Ransom, professor of agronomy.
KU grads
Students from Emporia are among 6,400 set to receive degrees from the University of Kansas on Sunday. The students and their degrees are:

• Trista Renee Taulu, daughter of Patricia Taula, bachelor’s of general studies with a minor in business.
Hopkins scholarships
Two Emporia students have received scholarships from Hopkins Manufacturing Corp. This scholarship program rewards employees or dependent children of employees of Hopkins Manufacturing Corp. and Carrand Companies who exemplify a high standard of quality and excellence in their educational endeavors; students that best represent the attitude and work ethics of Hopkins’ employees. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the 2007-2008 school year.
Kendra D. Cain attended Flint Hills Technical College and is currently working at Newman Hospital and Holiday Resort as a CNA. She is planning to attend FHTC to obtain her LPN degree. Kendra graduated with a 3.88 grade point average and honors from Emporia High School. She is the daughter of David Cain, safety and security coordinator in Emporia.
Tyler Ast is a student from Emporia High School with a 3.53 GPA who enjoys volunteering as a tutor and participating in extracurricular activities such as football, basketball and baseball. He plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue a degree in civil engineering. He is the son of Jim Ast, molding set-up tech in Emporia. Washburn grads
Two Emporians were among 730 who graduated Saturday from Washburn University. Kathryn Durbin earned a master’s of social work. Kristi Godfrey earned an associate of science degree in respiratory therapy.
Fort Hays scholar
Leslie Stanbrough, 2007 Emporia High School graduate, accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award from Fort Hays State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. She is involved in track, Future Educators of America, Science Club, Latin Club, Spartan Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and all-American heptathlon, is a volunteer youth track coach and is on the principal’s honor roll. Leslie is the daughter of Mark and Wendy Stanbrough of Emporia.
Set to deploy
Tech Sgt. Kyle Lyon, nephew of Kim Dodge of Emporia, will deploy May 25 for Balad, Iraq, for a five month tour of duty. Lyon of Ray City, Ga., is a flight line expeditor with the 723 AMXS/41HMU Squadron, based at Moody Air Force Base at Valdosta, Ga.
Lyon is a 1992 graduate of Yates Center High School, and has been in the Air Force for 14 years, previously stationed in Korea and Albuquerque. He is the son of Kelly and Carol Lyon of Yates Center.
