Waverly sweeps Lyon County League track and field titles

Saturday, May 12, 2007

Waverly swept the team titles at the Lyon County League track and field championships on Thursday, as the Waverly girls finished with 112 points to finish ahead of second-place Madison (108) while the Wasverly boys racked up 124 points to also finish ahead of Madison (101).

For the Waverly boys, the star of the day was Matt Coursen, who had a hand in five championships, including a new meet record.

Coursen won individual titles in the 100-meter dash (11.05 seconds), the 200 (23.12 seconds), the 110-meter hurdles (15.28 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (39.74), which broke the old LCL meet record of 40.4 seconds set by Jamie Dreiling of Waverly in 1999.

Coursen also teamed with Heath Redding, Kale Hamm and Dakota Foster to win the 4x400 relay title in a time of 3 minutes, 36.82 seconds.

The Bulldogs picked up several other event championships on their way to the team title. Foster won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:04.56, Hamm won the high jump with a final height of 6 feet, 4 inches, Joe Kaufman took the discus title with a heave of 134-6 3/4 and Redding won the javelin with a throw of 190-7.

Madison’s Jordan Stout was a double event winner, winning the long jump (20-8) and the triple jump (41-5 1/2), while his teammate Donovan Hamilton produced Madison’s only other event winner by placing first in the pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet.

Jacob Ritter of Flinthills won the 3,200-meter run (10:56.53) and helped the Mustangs win the 4x800 relay — along with Logan Fullerton, Grant Vogt and Ethan Eisenbarth — in a time of 8:35.55.

Rounding out the boys event winners were: Hartford’s Aaron Thomsen in the 1,600 (4:51.68), Lebo’s 4x100 relay team (45.49), Lyndon’s Keene Neimack in the 400 (51.35 seconds) and Marais des Cygnes Valley’s Josh Fine in the shot put (45-2 1/2).

On the girls side, the league-champion Waverly Lady Bulldogs got two individual titles and two relay titles. Amy Schmidt won the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.81, and Tina Ervin won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:36.36. Waverly’s quartet of Schmidt, Kayla Pyle, Kirsten Henry and Whitney Good teamed up to take both the 4x400 relay (4:27.15) and the 4x800 relay (10:38.46) titles.

Madison’s Morgan had the most impressive day individually on the girls side, as the freshman took home four event titles. She won the 100 (12.83 seconds), the 200 (27.41 seconds), the high jump (5 feet) and the triple jump (34-5) to represent all four of Madison’s event winners.
