Moore powers Lady Spartans to League title, EHS boys 2nd

Saturday, May 12, 2007

Led by the two-title performance of senior Layne Moore, the Emporia High girls track and field squad captured the Centennial League team championship Friday at Seaman High School in Topeka.

The Emporia High boys also finished well, placing second behind Shawnee Heights.

Moore’s most impressive performance came in the 1,600-meter run, as the Missouri signee smashed her school record by nearly 3 seconds, as she crossed the line in 5 minutes, 4.87 seconds to win handily over Seaman’s Sydney Messick. Moore’s previous best time was 5:07.60.

Moore also won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:16.66, which set a new league record and was more than 6 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

The senior’s two championships aided the EHS girls in picking up 130 1/2 team points to finish in first, while Junction City was second (122) and Manhattan was third (105).

Two other Lady Spartans won league titles as well. Leslie Stanbrough won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.44 seconds while Samantha Kraft took the pole vault with a final clearance of 10 feet.

Emporia also won four event titles on the boys side, as the EHS boys finished with 115 points behind Shawnee Heights’ 167 points.

Mark Kolmer had a breakout day on the track and in the field, as the freshman won his first league track title with his victory in the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.64 seconds. He also finished second in the javelin with a throw of 181 feet, 8 inches, though he was a distant second to Shawnee Heights’ Ian Trimble, who set the national high school record in the javelin with a throw of 229-7.

Caydrick Bloomquist finished well ahead of the field in the boys pole vault, clearing 14-3 to finish 1 foot, 3 inches ahead of the runner-up.

Two distance runners provided the other two titles for the EHS boys. Asher Delmott won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:01.25, and Jacob Davies took first in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:57.11, barely nipping Seaman’s Clay Schneider (1:57.59).

Elsewhere on the girls side, Heather Coe took second in the triple jump (33-6 1/4), Lindsay Holland placed second in the high jump (5 feet) and Emporia’s 4x400 relay team also placed second (4:08.45).

Raelynn Pearson took third in the discus (114-5), Michaela Reynolds took third in the 3,200 (11:33.06) and the Lady Spartans’ 4x800 team placed third as well (10:06.27).

On the boys side, Kyle Goodwin came in second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 41.92 seconds, while Eric Dorsey placed third in the discus (152-6) and Emporia’s 4x800 relay team took third (8:23.14).
