Child safety seat clinic re-scheduled

A Child Safety Seat Inspection delayed by snow last month has been rescheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Staple’s, 2200 Industrial Road. In case of rain, the inspection will be held at Longbine Auto Plaza, 3012 West Highway 50.

The inspection will be conducted by certified “Safe Kids” safety technicians and is sponsored by Safe Kids of Emporia, East Central Kansas Child Care Resources, Earl head Start, Kiwanis, and the Early Childhood Task Force.

Parents and others who use child safety seats are asked to bring seats and their children to the inspection.

Free booster seats may be available for some participants, a news release stated.

Continuing a UMKC tradition

Kevin Powers received a doctoral degree on Saturday, May 5, from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Powers’ degree is in musical arts in wind conducting.

He is the son of Norman and Phyllis Powers of Emporia. Norman Powers received his degree in dentistry from UMKC 44 years earlier.

ABATE alerts drivers to motorcycles

The local chapter of ABATE will hold an event on May 19 to emphasize the need for vehicle drivers to be aware of motorcyclists.

All area motorcyclists are eligible to meet between 6 to 7 p.m. at Guion’s Furniture Showcase parking lot for a social period, according to ABATE member Deb Fuller.

Between 7 and 7:30 p.m., participants will go for a ride, stop to eat and distribute signs intended to make drivers alert to motorcyclists.

Collecting for Landon Dody

An Emporia State alum will donate 20 percent of proceeds from a sale to help Landon Dody, an Emporia infant that was born with medical problems early this year. Wednesday at the ESU Federal Credit Union from 1 to 5 p.m. jewerly will be sold with 20 percent of the proceeds being donated to the Landon Dody fund.

Card shower requested

The family of Vivian Fleming, who lived in Emporia for 95 years, requests cards in honor of her 96th birthday on June 2.
