The tables turned on the Emporia High girls soccer team Wednesday night, as the Lady Spartans lost to Hayden, 2-0, one day after defeating Blue Valley by the same score.
Hayden got two goals within 6 minutes of each other midway through the first half, and that would be enough to keep Emporia at bay despite several close calls for the Lady Spartans.
“We started off the game pretty well,” EHS coach John Decker said. “We had a couple shots just miss when they hit off the posts. Then they (Hayden) got their first goal, and our heads went down a little, and for a while after that we were not very good.”
Hayden opened the scoring when Hayley Gamber got through the EHS defense and scored from short range off an assist from Abi Dodds in the game’s 23rd minute. Then, in the 29th minute, Dodds got in the scoring act herself with a goal of her own, this one coming from an assist by Emily Andres.
After that, Emporia played evenly with Hayden, but could never close the gap, Decker said.
“It was a pretty straight-up game in the second half, and we had a few close chances,” Decker said, “but we just couldn’t get it into the net.”
EHS plays its third game in as many days when it plays host to Topeka High at 6:15 tonight at TRYSA.
