Free phone calls
Emporia veterans will be able to make free long-distance telephone calls on Sunday — Mother’s Day — at American Legion Post 5, 2921 W. 12th Ave. The service will be provided by U.S. Cellular.
Calls can be made from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Veterans may call their friends and loved ones anywhere in the continental United States. U.S. Cellular will provide wireless phones and assistance in making the calls.
“We are grateful to U.S. Cellular for this opportunity,” said John Sanderson, post commander. “Giving veterans a chance to make contact with friends and family members with a simple phone call can go a long way to lift their spirits.”
Also on Mother’s Day, the first 100 mothers dining at the post will receive a long-stemmed carnation. The Mother’s Day buffet will include carved pork loin, fried chicken, Swiss steak and turkey pot pie.
Children under 5 eat free.
