The Flinthills baseball team split two games Tuesday, taking a 2-1 victory over Oxford before losing, 3-1, to Sedan.
Against Oxford, Flinthills got all the scoring it would need in the first two innings, as the Mustangs scored singles runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead, with Nate Nelson and Cody Oates each crossing the plate for Flinthills.
Oxford cut the score to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the third, but Flinthills starter Kiel Riemann kept Oxford scoreless after that to give the Mustangs the victory. Riemann improved to 5-0 on the season by going all seven innings and giving up five hits while striking out nine.
Nelson and Oates each finished with two hits, while Jeremy Jackson and Chayne Onek each drove in a run.
In Game Two against Sedan, Flinthills fell behind 3-0 after four innings and could only muster a single run in the bottom of the seventh to lose, 3-1.
Jackson took the loss on the mound after going five innings and giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Jackson led the Mustangs with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate while also scoring Flinthills’ only run.
Flinthills’ record in now 11-5.
Chase County baseball
splits 2 with Inman
The Chase County baseball team split a doubleheader with Inman on Saturday, losing 2-1 in the first game before bouncing back to take Game Two, 10-5.
In Game One, Chase County never could get its bats going, as the Bulldogs managed just two hits while striking out 13 times.
Chase County coach Jay Talkington somewhat expected that result, however.
“We have not had batting practice for a week and then came in and faced the best pitcher we have seen all year,” Talkington said. “I was not surprised we struggled at the plate.”
Inman got on the scoreboard with a run in the third inning when a throwing error allowed a run to score after an attempted steal. Inman struck twice in the fourth, in large part thanks to two walks from Bulldog pitcher Brad Talkington.
Chase County’s only run was scored in the fourth when Shawn Talkington singled, stole second and then scored after consecutive wild pitches.
In Game Two, the Bulldogs rebounded by blasting out 12 hits and scoring 10 runs, led by the offense of Trevor Johnson and Cole Starkey, who each had two hits and three RBI.
Adam Spain also hit his second home run of the season.
The big inning for Chase County came in the second, as the Bulldogs scored five runs to turn a 1-all tie into a 6-1 lead.
Greg Davis picked up the win, going 3 1/3 innings and giving up two runs while striking out two.
Chase County will play its final game of the regular season against Herington on Thursday. After that, the Bulldogs (11-2) will enter the Regional tournament as the No. 1 seed.
