Moore wins 400 to lead EHS track and field at S.M. North

Monday, May 7, 2007

Emporia High senior Layne Moore took home first place in the 400-meter dash at the Shawnee Mission North Relays on Friday.

The defending Class 5A State champion in the 400, Moore finished the race in a time of 57.21 seconds — more than a second ahead of the second-place finisher, Kayla Ubel of Blue Valley West (58.61).

Moore’s victory was the lone event title for the EHS track and field squad on Friday, though several Spartan athletes placed highly in helping both the boys and girls squads to 12th-place finishes in the team standings out of more than 30 teams.

Elsewhere on the girls side, junior Michaela Reynolds finished third in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 5 minutes, 20.58 seconds. Reynolds barely missed out on second place, as Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Christine Nelson finished in a time of 5:19.28. Gardner-Edgerton’s Cali George ran away from the field to take the title in a time of 5:07.52.

Moore and Reynolds were both part of the EHS girls’ 4x800 squad — along with Heather Coe and Jenna Stanbrough — that finished third in a time of 9:42.55.

Junior Samantha Kraft also brought home a third-place finish, with hers coming in the pole vault. Kraft, the defending 5A State champion in the pole vault, was the top Class 5A finisher in the event at the North Relays, clearing the bar at a personal-best height of 10 feet, 6 inches.

Other top performances for the EHS girls included a seventh-place finish by Leslie Stanbrough in the 300-meter hurdles (47.82 seconds) and a seventh-place finish by the 4x400 relay team of Coe, Jenna Stanbrough, Lindy Arndt and Moore.

On the boys side, the top finish of the day for EHS went to senior Jacob Davies in the 800-meter run. Davies finished second in the event with a time of 1:59.68, just behind champion Robin Kresinszky of Shawnee Mission East (1:58.52) and just ahead of the third-place finisher, Blue Valley’s Patrick Cooley (2:00.99).

Davies also took part in the EHS boys’ 4x800 relay team, along with Ryan Parks, Asher Delmott and Tyler Anliker. The quartet finished fifth in a time of 8:23.99.

Miles Ringgold had a solid outing in the field, as he uncorked a javelin throw of 175-3 to place fourth, less than 10 feet out of first. Also in the field, Eric Dorsey finished fourth and 17th in the discus and shot put, respectively.

Other top performances for the EHS boys included seventh-place finishes by Caydrick Bloomquist in the pole vault (13-6) and Brandon Childs in the triple jump (42-8 1/2).

The EHS girls finished with 22 team points, while Leavenworth took the girls team title with 70 points. The Spartan boys ended with 24 points, with Lawrence Free State winning the team title with 46 points.

Reynolds finished 3rd in the 3200? With a time of 5:20?! I believe that must have been the 1600.
