ESU’s Rossbach wins pair of MIAA titles

Monday, May 7, 2007

Jonel Rossbach led the Emporia State track teams by finishing with a pair of conference championships and high-point honors as the Hornets competed at the MIAA Championships in Hays on Saturday and Sunday.

The ESU women placed fifth and the men sixth at the eight-team meet.

“We really battled the weather. We had four delays,” ESU track and field coach Dave Harris said. “It was hard to stay focused, and our young kids had a real difficult time with the delays.”

Rossbach’s 36 team points made her the highest point-scorer of the meet. She won the 3,000-meter (10:40.60) and 5,000-meter (17:34.22) and took second in the 800 (2:14.71) and 1,500 (4:37.85).

“She accepts what she has to do in those four events, but she doesn’t like to lose,” Harris said. “She got beat in the 800 and 1,500, and it was emotionally trying for her. I had to keep telling her the goal was not to win every race, but instead win the most points for the team. She was still determined to win every one.”

Jaclyn Sill had the other individual championship for the women, beating teammate Kara Euler in the 400-meter run for the first time ever in competition.

Sill finished with a provisionally qualifying time of 55.78 seconds, which is the third-fastest mark in ESU history.

“That’ll probably get her to North Carolina for the National Championships,” Harris said.

Euler was second with a time of 56.80 seconds.

The pair also provisionally qualified in the 200, finishing third and fifth, respectively, after posting their best times in the preliminary round.

Brooke Kent added the other women’s provisional mark, running a 12.00 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash.

Andy Vogelsberg set the MIAA record in the javelin, taking first with a throw of 232 feet, 10 inches.

It was his third MIAA javelin championship.

Vogelsberg also provisionally qualified in the discus, throwing 160 feet, 2 inches to take sixth.

Trent Olivier chipped in two more provisional marks, finishing second in the discus (172 feet, 9 inches) and third in the hammer throw (181 feet, 8 inches).

“Our stars always step up, and that’s how we can compete in the team standings,” Harris said. “Jonel, Kara, Jaclyn, along with Andy and Trent all did that this meet.”

Tyson Allen and Damon Birk were the other provisional qualifiers for the ESU men. Allen took third in the javelin (198 feet, 8 inches), while Birk was third in the discus (167 feet, 8 inches) and fourth in the shot put (53 feet, 2.75 inches).

Central Missouri swept the team titles, as the women finished with 188 points and the men had 159.

ESU next will play host to the ATG Sports Last Chance Meet on May 12. The event will start at Welch Stadium following ESU Commencement that same day.
