The Emporia High boys golf team turned in an impressive team performance Thursday at the Junction City Invitational, finishing third out of 19 teams with a total score of 317, just 12 strokes behind team champion Manhattan (305).
Tanner Butz was the top finisher for the Spartans, carding a 3-over par 75 to place sixth individually. Dodge City’s Jarret Tagtmeyer took home first place with a 1-over 73.
Bren Fisher finished just two shots behind Butz with a final score of 77. Fisher’s score actually tied him with Abilene’s Gunnar Anderson and Manhattan’s Clark Fry, but Anderson won a scorecard playoff to finish 10th.
Rounding out the field for EHS was Eric Reimer with a 10-over 82, Fletcher Harder with an 11-over 83 and Jared Johnson with a 12-over 84.
The next action for the Spartans is next Tuesday at the Shawnee Heights Invitational in Topeka.
Rain postpones
Regional tennis
Rain in the Topeka area forced the postponement of the Regional tennis tournament at the Kossover Tennis Center on Thursday.
One Emporia High tennis player got a match in, with Sergio Segura falling, 8-4, to Robbie Proctor of Ottawa in singles play.
After receiving a first-round bye, singles player Chris Reimer’s first match against Blake Hamilton of Topeka West was tied at 1 before play was suspended. The winner of that match will earn a trip to State. Reimer most recently defeated Hamilton, 8-5, at the Centennial League meet on Tuesday.
In doubles action, the duo of Kyle deBlonk and Grant Price and the pair of Mark DeDonder and Jonathan Roman each had first-round byes and had not began their matches.
Play was set to resume again at 11 this morning.
Herington softball
goes 2-2 this week
The Herington softball team split four games earlier this week, sweeping Northern Heights 13-3 and 17-1 on Tuesday before losing to defending State Champion Salina-Sacred Heart 10-0 and 4-0 on Wednesday.
Against Heights, the Lady Railers took advantage of the opportunities given to them, taking 32 walks in the two games combined in the two run-rule victories.
Crysta Brockmeier led the offense in Game One, going 3-for-3. She also picked up the win, allowing one run in four innings while striking out six.
In the second game, Herington scored all 17 of its runs with the benefit of only three hits — with those coming from Brockmeier, Lacey Bennett and Kylie Kilmer.
After making three errors in Game One, the Lady Railers had none in Game Two.
On Wednesday, Herington couldn’t come through in a rematch of last year’s state championship game.
In Game One, Sacred Heart hurler Katie Coker — a transfer from Russell — struck out 15 of the 18 batters she faced.
Maddy Hirt broke up the no-hit bid with a single in the fourth.
In the second game, Sacred Heart scored three in the first and one in the second before being held scoreless the rest of the way.
Brockmeier and Hirt had the hits for Herington.
The win was Sacred Heart’s 59th consecutive victory — a streak that dates back to 2004. The team has won two consecutive State titles.
Herington (7-7) will play Canton-Galva today.
