Cinco De Mayo 2007 will be celebrated this weekend in Emporia. The celebration promises everything from a dance to a parade.
This is the ninth annual Cinco De Mayo celebration in Emporia. The events are sponsored by Budweiser, the Las Casitas Association and Jalapeno Productions. Events are planned for Saturday and Sunday and all events will be at Las Casitas Park on West South Avenue.
Victor Rodriguez, founder of the Las Casitas Association and coordinator for the event, said the rap group “Arapnaphobia” will perform around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by a dance from 6 to 10 p.m. with music provided by Grupo and Combinate. Prior to the musical events, arts and crafts vendors will be set up in the park starting at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, there will be a parade starting at 2:30 p.m. down South Avenue to the park. Immediately following, there will be food vendors, Little King and Queen coronations, a karate demonstration, Las Amigas dance group and Studio 2B Girl Scout troop demonstrations. At 5 p.m., Zalvos, a band from Emporia, will perform. A dance will close out the day.
Rodriguez said during the weekend, weather permitting, there will be a climbing wall and a blow-up obstacle course. KISS 103.1 will give away a car on Sunday to a participant who can unlock a code. The carnival rides will return next year for the 10th annual celebration.
All events this weekend are free.
“It’s a family event,” Rodriguez said. “You don’t have to be Hispanic to come out and join. It’s open to everybody and St. Catherine’s will have their famous tacos!”
The celebration will take place rain or shine, Rodriguez said.
“If you want to bring your raincoats or umbrellas, you’re more than welcome,” he said.
Anybody wanting more information or wanting to join the parade on Sunday can call Rodriguez at 344-5430.
Cinco De Mayo marks the anniversary of the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Ok. Lets get the truth out about the real reason for Cinco De Mayo!
Some may not know the signifigance of this observance so in the interest of international relationships I will explain Cinco De Mayo. Relations between the US and our sister rebublic to the south have been strained and so a better understanding of the Mexican observance may calm things.
In 1910 a salesman from the United States introduced a new food product to the Mexican populace, one that they had never tasted before. It was mayonnase.
The Mexican people went wild over this new food and clamored for more. It seemed that an insatiable appitete had been created. Unfortunately, the supply was soon exausted leaving the people yearning for more.
While sporadic attempts to satisfy this appetite were made processing facilities in the US were inadequate. It was determined that only England had the capicity to provide enough to satisfy demand. This information was relayed to the Mexican people and they anxiously awaited resupply of this exciting new food product.
Thus it was that in April of 1914 a ship set sail from England. It is a little known but true fact that three holds of the Titanic were stuffed with mayonnase bound for Mexico.
The plan was after docking in New York to then continue on to Vera Cruze and deliver the much anticipated and longed for new food.
Alas, we all know what happened to the Titanic.
Communications being what they were in that early day the news of the Titanic disaster did not reach Mexico until the first week in May. The people were very sad and distressed when they learned of the tragedy.
Ever since that unfortunate time Mexico has observed the day when they heard about;
Cinco De Mayo!

The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.
So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.
The French had landed in Mexico (along with Spanish and English troops) five months earlier on the pretext of collecting Mexican debts from the newly elected government of democratic President (and Indian) Benito Juarez. The English and Spanish quickly made deals and left. The French, however, had different ideas.
Under Emperor Napoleon III, who detested the United States, the French came to stay. They brought a Hapsburg prince with them to rule the new Mexican empire. His name was Maximilian; his wife, Carolota. Napoleon's French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion. The French were not afraid of anyone, especially since the United States was embroiled in its own Civil War.
The French Army left the port of Vera Cruz to attack Mexico City to the west, as the French assumed that the Mexicans would give up should their capital fall to the enemy -- as European countries traditionally did.
Under the command of Texas-born General Zaragosa, (and the cavalry under the command of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, later to be Mexico's president and dictator), the Mexicans awaited. Brightly dressed French Dragoons led the enemy columns. The Mexican Army was less stylish.
May 8, 2007 at 7:54 a.m. ( permalink | suggest removal )
eljefe101 (anonymous) says...
General Zaragosa ordered Colonel Diaz to take his cavalry, the best in the world, out to the French flanks. In response, the French did a most stupid thing; they sent their cavalry off to chase Diaz and his men, who proceeded to butcher them. The remaining French infantrymen charged the Mexican defenders through sloppy mud from a thunderstorm and through hundreds of head of stampeding cattle stirred up by Indians armed only with machetes.
When the battle was over, many French were killed or wounded and their cavalry was being chased by Diaz' superb horsemen miles away. The Mexicans had won a great victory that kept Napoleon III from supplying the confederate rebels for another year, allowing the United States to build the greatest army the world had ever seen. This grand army smashed the Confederates at Gettysburg just 14 months after the battle of Puebla, essentially ending the Civil War.
Union forces were then rushed to the Texas/Mexican border under General Phil Sheridan, who made sure that the Mexicans got all the weapons and ammunition they needed to expel the French. American soldiers were discharged with their uniforms and rifles if they promised to join the Mexican Army to fight the French. The American Legion of Honor marched in the Victory Parade in Mexico, City.
It might be a historical stretch to credit the survival of the United States to those brave 4,000 Mexicans who faced an army twice as large in 1862. But who knows?
In gratitude, thousands of Mexicans crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. Armed Forces. As recently as the Persian Gulf War, Mexicans flooded American consulates with phone calls, trying to join up and fight another war for America.
Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans. That's why Cinco de Mayo is such a party -- A party that celebrates freedom and liberty. There are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862. VIVA! el CINCO DE MAYO!!

Good job Melissa. My questions are why doesn't the American system encourage such a display of patriotism for the American holidays? Oh, I forgot, most of the "Americans" are actually Mexican illegals! And why are my tax dollars paying for maintenance of the park, police protection for a parade that most of us don't really care about, free health care for those that don't/can't/won't work, etc. while I'm barely able to make ends meet while working legally. I think the name of Cinco De Mayo should be changed to May 5, period. After all we Americans are not even suppose to say Merry Christmas.

I do believe the americans of emporia do show a great display of patriotism. We call it 4th of July. You know, when most of the citizens of Emporia -white, mexican, black, asian, purple, yellow, orange and samolian, all gather at the fair grounds to watch the fire works?! No one is obligated to go, but EVERYONE is invited, just like everyone was invited to the Cinco de Mayo celebration. If you don't want to go, DON'T.

I liked wasp story about Cinco De Mayo! It's just a cute, clean joke, no harm to anyone. Except maybe to Melissa E who does not have a sense of humor and takes everything seriously or personally.
It's really simple - if you do not want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, DON"T. If you do not want to celebrate Jesus's birthday, DON'T GO to the Seasonal Celebration, BUT LET US CHANGE IT BACK TO A TRUE CHRISTMAS PROGRAM.
But if you live in this country, you are enjoying the freedoms that our servciemen and women have fought for - YOU HAD BETTER CELEBRATE THE 4th of JULY / INDEPENDENCE DAY. That is the least you could do.

Get over yourself. Ask anyone. I served my country. In the Navy, for over 4 years.
Go back to your couch, now, midnight_rider. Get off your high horse. And, fwiw, I'm completely offended that you think wasp's "joke" is a "cute, clean joke" with no harm to anyone. YUCK. It's harmful to everyone. And you know what? I actually served and defended your opinions. Keep that in mind.

I didn't serve my country so you can be a bigot. I served my country so we can preserve the beliefs of ALL PEOPLE. People like you make me ashamed to say I'm from Emporia.

I really don’t want to pile on, but I was very surprised by your initial posting on this topic. For someone who has proclaimed superior internet and discussion board knowledge/experience I found myself surprised that you had never seen the initial posting by Wasp. It has probably floated around the internet for at least 5 years.
I know that you like to post things on this site for every topic under the sun and you are tired of trying to educate us Emporians…you know the ones who do live here. The fact is that not everyone is as enamored with your opinion as you are. There has never ever been a point in time where I read an article on this site and thought, “I wonder what MelissaE thinks about this”. Yet you always feel the need to express your opinion. That’s fine, but try not to get too uptight when others disagree or express their opinion that might be different than yours. Honestly based on your comment about washing the filth of Emporia…I thought and hoped maybe you were done posting on this site.
I know from another posting that your husband is apparently in Iraq. I sincerely hope that he comes home safe and sound. I also hope that you can find something to keep yourself busy and satisfied in his absence, because it appears that posting on this site is not providing any gratification.
I thought the postings from eljefe101 were educational and all, but please don’t assume that because it didn’t get the response that you expected that we are ignorant. It’s only because people already knew it, or don’t care. That doesn’t make us ignorant we just have better things to spend our time on…and every once in awhile, lightening the mood is a good thing.
It’s very clear that the posting on Cinco de Mayo was a copy and paste.
Good times…..

How is Cinco de Mayo taking away from American holidays? Oh--and how is that different from, say, St. Patrick's Day?
Or Columbus Day? (Because he WAS NOT American).
Maybe we need Indian Day. For the "true" Americans....or would that be wrong, too?
Or what if we just celebrate the KKK? I mean, they're about as insulting as you can get, right? They were "for" the "white Americans" but not much else.......
My point is: Don't insult the heritage of others....no one is better than the next person.

What, if anything, does an "illegal" or "free loafer" have to do with a Spanish celebration of May 5th?
Is the celebration preventing you from celebrating something else on May 5th?
How about this--how many people would be really upset to see Cinco de Mayo become another national holiday that is a day off? Sure, they'll complain because it's "unAmerican" LOL, but when they're sleeping late that day because no one has to work and catching up on household chores (all because of this unAmerican day off) then I bet the complaints stop. Or, maybe all the "true" Americans will get up and go to work (yeah right).

This should open a few eyes as to what is happening in our country today. They are wanting to allow 12 million " illegal" immigrants a chance at citizenship. Think about this by the economy of our country and what jobs are to be lost. Also, think about those that can not get jobs but will go on our welfare, medicaid, food stamps etc.
