Strike up the band
In honor of Emporia’s 150th anniversary, the Emporia Municipal Band has commissioned a new piece from Kansas composer James Barnes. The piece, tentatively titled “Beacon on the Prairie,” will be premiered by the band at its July 5 concert in Fremont Park, which starts at 8 p.m.
The piece will also be performed July 13 in Wichita at the Kansas Bandmasters Association convention. Barnes will guest-conduct. Barnes is an award-winning composer from the University of Kansas.
This summer, the municipal band will also perform another piece written for Emporia in the early 20th century, “Emporia Galop” by circus bandmaster Karl King.
Student art show

Mulvane art fair
Three area artists will be among the 88 people showing works at this year’s Mulvane Mountain/Plains Art Fair June 2 and 3.
Franz Donelson of Americus will have glass works on display, while Gabriel Stoner and Michael Hatton of Osage City will show their kinetic sculptures and mobiles. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 2 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 at Washburn University in Topeka, near Whiting Field House.

Emporia artist shown at Washburn
The porcelain “Anagama Vase” by Andrew Roland of Emporia is part of Washburn University’s student art show this year.
Roland is a sophomore at Washburn majoring in political science and public administration. The show opened April 20 and will run through June 24 at the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn.

DeWayn Brothers
come home
The DeWayn Brothers will return to Emporia Thursday and Friday for shows at Josie’s, 19 E. Sixth Ave. Tickets are $5.
On Thursday, The Fast Food Junkies of McPherson and Amsterband of Springfield, Mo. will open the show at 9:30 p.m. On Friday, the Rounders from Oklahoma City will open at 9:30 p.m. The DeWayn Brothers will take the stage at midnight both nights.
This is the DeWayn Brothers’ first show in Kansas since beginning the last leg of its spring tour in March. The band has been touring in support of its CD “Farmer” which was released on March 30.
“High School Musical”
Sondra Burden’s Studio of Fine Arts will present its summer musical at 7 p.m. May 30 at the Emporia Arts Council. The studio will perform “High School Musical” and selections from “Aida.” The group will also perform in Branson, Mo. at the Pierce Arrow, Dixie Stampede and Magnificent Seven between June 1 and June 5.
