Vogelsberg, Stueve named top ESU Student-Athletes

Thursday, May 3, 2007

National champion Andy Vogelsberg and All-American Michelle Stueve were named the Emporia State Outstanding Student-Athletes of the Year at the ESU senior honors banquet on Wednesday.

The award is presented annually to deserving athletes based upon their performance over time, athletic achievement, academic success, community service and contribution to the team.

Vogelsberg, a senior from Home, is the defending national champion in the javelin. He is a member of the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and also the United States Track and Field Coaches’ All-Academic team. He has posted a 3.30 grade-point average in biology at ESU.

Stueve, a junior from Olpe, is the first Lady Hornet basketball player to twice be selected to the Kodak All-American team. She led the MIAA in scoring and rebounding and was a unanimous first-team all-conference selection. She is an academic All-MIAA performer, a member of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District award-winner. She has compiled a 3.68 GPA in biology.

Runner Jonel Rossbach and football player Joel Griffiths earned the Becker Award, which is given to outstanding underclassmen who excel in athletics, academics and community service.

Rossbach earned All-American honors in both cross country and indoor track this year, while Griffiths was a second-team All-MIAA performer as a sophomore last season.

Tennis player Kevin Arnhold and volleyball player Leah Griswold took home the Wal-Mart Without Peer Awards, which recognize student-athletes that stand out from their peers.

Arnhold is the captain of the men’s tennis team, helping the Hornets to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Griswold is the ESU career leader in digs.

ESU supporter Vern McKinzie won the Joe Cannon Service Award, given for dedication, service and commitment to bettering ESU and intercollegiate athletics.

McKinzie and his wife, Nancy, have been regulars at ESU sporting events at home and on the road for many years. Vern also has served as the Hornet baseball team’s public-address announcer for the last four years.
