Man arrested on suspicion

Wednesday, May 2, 2007

Emporia police have arrested Marvin Matt on suspicion of kidnapping, pending a review by the Lyon County attorney.

Matt was charged on suspicion of kidnapping a woman, who was found in a house on Washington Street.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Williams said the investigation was continuing and that additional charges are expected.

According to the Emporia Police Department, police received a suspicious subject call Tuesday morning for the 900 block of Congress Street. When officers arrived at 7 a.m., the subject had left, but a black bag was found with Mary Kay cosmetics and clothing. Williams said the items were seized and were believed to be stolen.

Officers then spotted the suspicious subject in the 800 block of Neosho Street. They ran after him but did not catch him.

At around 12:36 p.m., another suspicious subject call came in from Ninth Avenue and Walnut Street. According to police, the description strongly resembled the person they had pursued earlier. Again, officers located the person and a foot chase ensued that ended after the subject ran into a home at 633 Washington St. The alleged victim was found in the house.

Officers from the Emporia Police Department, the Emporia State University Police and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department sealed off the area. They arrested the man, identified as 20-year-old Marvin Matt, after the residents left the house.

Anyone with information on this is asked to call the Emporia Police Department at 342-1766 or Crime Stoppers at 342-2273.
