Waverly, So. Coffey County track teams strong at Madison

The Waverly boys and the Southern Coffey County girls were the top area teams at the Madison Track and Field Invitational on Friday, with the Waverly boys taking first and the SCC girls placing third in the team standings.

The Waverly boys were led by senior Matt Coursen’s three first-place finishes. Coursen’s titles came in the 100-meter dash (11.31 seconds), the 110-meter hurdles (16.29 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (40.96 seconds).

Waverly had two other individual event winners, as Kale Hamm won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, while Dakota Foster took the 800-meter run title in a time of 2 minutes, 8.14 seconds. The Waverly boys also won the 4x800 meter relay (3:37.58).

Madison’s Jordan Stout picked up two individual titles for the Bulldogs, who placed second as a team behind Waverly. Stout won the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 9 inches, and the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 5.5 inches. He also finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.86 seconds.

Emporia High sent several athletes to the invitational, with freshman Lance Sadler claiming two event titles — the first in the 3,200-meter run (10:53.21) and the second in the freshman/sophomore 1,600 (5:09.92). Cory Obermeyer won the freshman/sophomore 110-meter hurdles for EHS in a time of 20 seconds, while the freshman/sophomore 4x100 relay team also took first (49 seconds).

Hartford’s Keegan Crawford won the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:54.67, Lebo’s Bryant Linsey won the javelin with a throw of 158-6 and Marais des Cygnes Valley’s Josh Fine was victorious in the shot put with a heave of 46-1 1/2 to round out the area’s individual title winners. Southern Coffey County’s Dane Birk was the top area performer in the discus with a throw of 133-11 to place second, Ben Dains of Madison was the runner-up in the pole vault with a clearance of 10-6 and Lebo’s Cameron Smith placed second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.95 seconds.

Lebo won the boys 4x100 relay (46.2 seconds), Flinthills took the 4x800 relay (8:57.19) and Olpe won the freshman/sophomore 4x400 relay (3:53.02).

On the girls side, Shelby Birk was the lone event winner for Southern Coffey County, as she won the long jump with a leap of 14-7 1/2.

Madison’s Morgan Stout pulled off a two-title day like her brother by winning the high jump (5 feet) and the triple jump (31-11 1/2).

Tera Titus of Madison won the discus with a heave of 102-2, Carley Durham of Flinthills won the 1,600-meter run in a time of 6:17.65, Kayla Pile of Waverly took the 800 title in a time of 2:39.38 and Nickole Presley won the javelin with a throw of 107-2 to complete the area’s individual title winners.

Emporia’s Kelsey Camien won the 3,200 (13:31.43) and Anna Pinon won the freshman/sophomore 1,600 (6:35.28), while the Lady Spartans nabbed the freshman/sophomore 4x400 relay title (4:50.64) as well.

Waverly won the 4x800 (11:02.44) and Olpe won the freshman/sophomore 4x100 (56.84).

The top area finishers in the other events were: Laurie Ohl of SCC in the 100 (third, 13.59 seconds), Kaitlin Meyer of SCC in the 100-meter hurdles (fourth, 20.02 seconds), Morgan Stout in the 200 (second, 28.26 seconds), Keshia Harris of Emporia in the 300-meter hurdles (fourth, 54.87) and the freshman/sophomore 100-meter hurdles (second, 18.98 seconds), Waverly in the 4x100 (third, 56.19 seconds) and the 4x400 (second, 4:30.56), Amy Schmidt of Waverly in the 400 (second, 1:03.77), Cassie Combs of SCC in the shot put (second, 35-5 1/2) and Corrine Edds of Emporia in the pole vault (7 feet).

named All-MIAA

Two members of the Emporia State men’s tennis team were named honorable mention All-MIAA, the conference announced Monday.

Kevin Arnhold and Tim Garner were honored for their role on the No. 3 doubles team, which was 5-5 in duals this season.

Arnhold is a senior from Hutchinson, while Garner is a sophomore from Gardner.

Burlington baseball splits with Chase County

Burlington handed the Chase County baseball team its first loss of the year on Friday, winning 11-8 in Cottonwood Falls.

CCHS rallied to take the lead in the fifth with six runs to make it 8-7, but Burlington responded.

The Wildcats put a runner on second with two outs in the seventh inning before four consecutive Bulldog errors pushed in the winning four runs.

Shawn Talkington led the Chase County offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Cole Starkey also contributed a pair of hits.

Earlier Friday, Chase County defeated Burlington, 13-3. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, and starter Talkington carried a no-hitter into the sixth.

CCHS (10-1) was led offensively by Brian Palermo, who went 5-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Talkington, Johnny Lang and Greg Davis all had three hits, with Davis contributing his first home run.
