Cast Your Ballot

Saturday, March 31, 2007

Every single voter in Lyon County has a reason to vote.

Some confusion has been evident among Lyon County residents who think that, because they did not need to vote in the primary election, there is no contest happening in their precincts in the general election, said County Clerk Karen Hartenbower.

“The primary was just narrowing the field,” Hartenbower said. “Everybody in Lyon County has something to vote on.”

Several precincts in school board elections had only two candidates file for thea seats. Consequently, there were not enough candidates to require a vote in the primary.

In the general election, however, those two candidates constitute a race for a school-board seat.

Hartenbower said that voting as of early afternoon Friday had been slow. One hundred forty-nine ballots were mailed out for absentee voters, and 418 people had voted in advance.

Monday morning will be the last opportunity for local voters to cast their ballots in advance of Tuesday’s general election. Advance voting ends at noon at Hartenbower’s office.

For those who remain undecided, The Gazette has been printing candidates’ responses to questions in recent editions and will publish a special section with all candidates’ responses in Monday’s paper.

Emporia City Commissioners Bob Agler and Tom Myers are running for re-election. Their opponents are Phil Dillon, Jeff Longbine, Kevin Nelson and Jesse Solis. Voters will elect three commissioners.

Eight candidates are running for four open positions on the Emporia Board of Education. Board president Grant Riles is the only current board member running for re-election. Others on the ballot are Michael C. Helbert, Arden (Ardie) Lauxman, Leslie Rathke-Seeley, Angie Schreiber, Glen Strickland, Ty Wheeler and Brent Windsor.

Candidates for contested seats in Southern Lyon County are Kenny Hamman and Donald E. Roberts, Position 2; Craig A. Clark and Roland Martin, Position 7 (at-large).

Greg Larson and Wayne Symmonds are candidates for Position 7, the only contested race on the North Lyon County school board.

Why are there no video interviews and photos for the Emporia School Board candidates on the Gazette website? I understand that they were done with the idea of helping voters see and hear those candidates as well as the City Commission candidates. It's right before the election, and they're nowhere to be seen. The two City Commission candidates that did not make it through the primary should have been deleted from the current website also. The total emphasis has been on the Commission race, with very little attention to the important School Board race until this past week.
