Menu Foods declares problem found, pet food safe

Emporia plant expected to reopen next week

Friday, March 30, 2007

Menu Pet Foods announced Friday afternoon that its pet food is again safe for consumption.

Menu President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Henderson said that all the pet illnesses and deaths that had been reported could be tied to adulterated wheat gluten from a Chinese source. According to tests by the Food and Drug Administration, the gluten contained melamine, a substance used to make plastics.

Henderson said that the supplier has been discontinued and no Menu food made after March 6 contains the contaminated gluten.

“Let me be clear on this — we have removed the problem from our system,” Henderson said at a press conference Friday. “I can say with confidence to our consumers ... that our products are safe.”

In an earlier interview, menu spokesman Sam Bornstein said the Menu Foods plant in Emporia should re-open no later than Monday. The employees have been out for about a week on unpaid leave while the plant responded to the recall.

Safe? They want us pet owners to trust them after all of this?

No thanks, Ill stick to feeding a raw, species appropriate diet. I know exactly what my beloved pets are eating and in the 7 years of feeding this diet, Ive never had a problem.

I will not buy pet food from a plant that will not pay their employees who are layed off and not paid due to a problem that is that of the company. If they don't care for employees any more that that I'm sure they don't have that much concern for other peoples pets

Are you an employee? If so, how are they doing this? Can anyone help? I am very sorry this has happened to you or someone else.

Is the FDA going to continue testing? Melamine hasn't been conclusively linked to the health problems so it might've been something else that Menu Foods should have reasonably tested for. They're trying to sweep it under the rug.
