Q Why are you running for office?
A I am running for office because our schools are facing unique challenges as they strive to meet the needs of today’s students and I believe that my background, knowledge and dedication can provide successful leadership for our schools.
Q If elected, what are your goals?
A I have three stated goals. First, create a learning environment, which encourages lifelong learning. Second, create high standards, which prepare students for the global economy. Third, create a budget reporting system that is more transparent and accountable for the taxpayers.
Q How will the Emporia school board be better with you as a member?
A The background and knowledge that I bring to the table will be beneficial to the Emporia school board. As a certified academic language therapist with thirteen years teaching students with dyslexia to read, I have an understanding of the importance of reading for all students. I have worked with educators across the school district and share similar hopes and concerns of many of the parents with whom I have worked. I was a practicing CPA for many years, which provides me with an understanding of budgeting and auditing necessary when reviewing, evaluating and approving a school district budget.
Q What do you think is the biggest issue facing the Emporia school board and how would you resolve it?
A The biggest issue facing school boards today is implementing and funding the use of the Responsiveness to Intervention or RTI process. This process is a multi-tiered approach to providing services and interventions to struggling learners at increasing levels of intensity. RTI can be used in general, compensatory, or special education and the intervention is guided by child outcome data. Providing these types of services to students creates success on an individual level, however, an increase in district personnel is needed to implement this type of intervention. During the district’s Performance Based Budgeting process, many schools indicated a need for an increase in instructional strategists to help with Tier Two and Tier Three strategies and once hired some type of training for these strategists. As a solution, the district should use the Qualified Instructor employed by the Special Education Cooperative and train these strategists in research-based reading techniques. Strategists could then assess and implement the foundational building blocks to successful reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. By training all the strategists together they could easily move between buildings as needs change, and could work with a variety of students.
Q What should the Emporia school board’s priorities be when it plans a budget?
A I believe the following three areas should be priorities in the budget planning process:
1. Continue to provide highly qualified instructional staff in all buildings;
2. Provide instructional opportunities, which help all students, become literate, skilled at learning and passionate about learning;
3. Provide a summary budget that is easily understood by the taxpayers.
Q Looking to the future, what are three things you’d like to see happen in the Emporia school district?
A First, I would want an expansion of opportunities for students who excel in school. Their curiosity should be encouraged and school should be a place for them to grow and explore. Second, I would like to see an increased emphasis on fine arts, including music, art and drama. Studies show that students enrolled in these classes are typically more involved, have good grades, and less likely to get in trouble. Finally, our district would become a model for the rest of the state by having all our students read at grade level.

Why is it that no one has accused this canidate of using the voting system to her advantage? You all seemed pretty quick to accuse Mrs Rathke-Seeley. Just so you know I voted for Angie also.
