No one injured in shootings

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Shooting incidents within the city and the county kept law-enforcement officers busy on Tuesday.

An argument over a business transaction resulted in shots being fired about 4:25 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Road 200.

“The argument became physical and led to shots being fired towards the victim,” Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy Garland Hendrickson said in a news release on the incident.

The suspect, identified as Ralph Hahn of rural Emporia, was taken into custody after he was accused of shooting at a neighbor, Steve Denson. The circumstances will be reviewed by the Lyon County Attorney. Formal charges are pending.

Emporia Police Department officers responded on Tuesday to several reports of shots fired in the area of 800 Congress and 900 Neosho Street, beginning at 9:33 p.m.

Sgt. Mark Summey said officers spent about 30 minutes searching the vicinity, but were unable to locate anything.

Later that evening, a man reported that several unknown men in a small white car fired two shots at his vehicle and one struck its rear. The incident was in the 900 block of Constitution Street.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the Emporia Police Department, 342-1766.

The first report of the shots fired came close to our house at 919 Neosho. My wife reported it and the police came. They didn't "find" anything. Then came the incident near the 900 block of Constitution.

Today when I returned from meeting with AARP there were two police cars. My wife told me that a neighbor had reported more shots fired. This would have been approximately 1:30.

In the candidate forums yesterday Mr. Agler, Solis, Nelson,Longbine, and Myers said that we needed to think positively about Emporia, that negative talk wasn't good. They meant me, of course.

Mr. Myers said I was spinning for political benefit. My response was that telling the truth was the best way for us to get out of the mess we're in. It's amazing how someone with a vested interest in being re-elected can call the truth "spin."

I wonder if the other candidates would think the same if drive by shootings were coming to their part of town. I wonder if they'd think the same if their businesses were being robbed at knife-point. Ron Wright's hotel was on W 50 Hwy was robbed again last night. That's three times in the past six months.

Sure, everything's just fine in Emporia. I shouldn't be givin' them hell. The truth is, I'm not. As Harry Truman said, "I'm not giving them hell. I'm just telling the truth and they think I'm giving them hell."

The police had to come by again last night. Just before we went to bed there was another gunshot. We reported it and when the officer arrived someone else called in about a shot fired.

But, hey, as young people say today, "It's all good!"
