Vietnam veterans’ vigil
The Flint Hills Area Vietnam Veterans will have a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Thursday at the All Veterans Memorial Park on South Commercial Street.
The vigil, which marks the anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and is part of the nationwide Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day, is open to the public.
Take Back the Night
The Emporia State University Women’s Center and SOS will sponsor the annual Take Back the Night event starting at 7 p.m. April 5 in the Sunken Gardens at ESU.
The event is intended to promote awareness of rape and violence against women. It is open to victims and supporters. Take Back the Night will include a candlelight vigil and a talk by Ashley-Michelle Papon, a member of the speakers bureau for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
If the weather is bad, the event will be moved to the Flint Hills Room in the Memorial Union.
Living with mental illness
The president of the Topeka chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will be the guest speaker for the April meeting of a group planning to start an Emporia NAMI chapter. The meeting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, in the Emporia Public Library.
Joe Stolemyer will present “In Our Own Voice,” a program concerning living with mental illness and “learning about it from people who have been there,” according to information from the group.
A discussion also will held about formation of the local group. Meetings will be held the first Tuesday of each month.

Emporia Christian School, 1325 C of E Drive, is holding Kindergarten Roundup from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today.
Those who attend may tour the school, meet the teacher and get enrollment information.
