Michael Lane has been president of Emporia State University since November. But this week, ESU makes it official.
Open houses, lectures, and a host of other events are on tap for this week at ESU, climaxing with Lane’s inauguration on Saturday. The inauguration ceremony will be the first ESU has held since Kay Schallenkamp became president in 1997.
The formalities will begin at 1:40 p.m. Saturday with a processional to Albert Taylor Hall by faculty, staff and students in academic robes. The ceremony will run from 2 p.m. until about 3:30 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall and will include remarks by Lane. A reception will then be held from 3:30 p.m. until about 6 p.m. in Webb Lecture Hall and the Colonial Ballroom of the ESU Memorial Union. But that’s skipping to the end of the week. Here’s what leads up to it:
Today
• From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Anderson Memorial Library is holding an open house. Several exhibits are on display, including the William Allen White collection and an exhibit on ESU’s first president, Lyman Kellogg. In addition, tours of the William Allen White library are being held every half hour, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A shuttle bus will run between the two libraries every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Demonstrations of White Library’s various services and electronic resources will take place throughout the day in Room 209C. The final demonstration, dealing with the archives catalog, will begin at 3 p.m. and run until 3:20.
• From 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Anderson Library, author Beverly Buller will read from her children’s story about William Allen White.
• Anderson Library’s “Eloquent Archives” catalog, which was dedicated and demonstrated this morning, will be demonstrated again at 4 p.m.
• At 4 p.m., State Librarian Christie Brandau will speak on “A Vision of Libraries, Technology and the Future” at Room 319F of White Library. Refreshments will be served.
Tuesday
• The School of Business will have an open house from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Cremer Hall, rooms 203 through 206.
• A panel on the educational needs of international business will be held at 11 a.m. in Cremer Hall 204. Participants will be Shelly Finley of Glendo, Natalie Moreau of Payless ShoeSource, Charles Steffes of ABZ Manufacturing, John Watson of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Trade, and Tom Webb of Concept W.
• At 1 p.m., another panel will be held at Cremer Hall 204, this time on ethics and social responsibility. Participants will be Don Hill of the Medicine Shoppe, D.R. Leach of Koch Industries and Tim Wright of Pool & Wright Chartered CPAs.
Wednesday
• From 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., ESU’s nursing students will hold a health fair at the Memorial Union and check blood pressure.
• From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be demonstrations of art pottery and of the geographical information system (GIS) at the Memorial Union.
• A scholarship luncheon will be held at 11:30 p.m. in the Colonial Ballroom of the Memorial Union.
• An international poetry reading will be held at 1 p.m. in the Flint Hills Room of the Memorial Union, followed by a 1:45 p.m. poetry and fiction reading.
• At 2:30 p.m., a panel of students will speak in the Flint Hills Room about experiences with studying abroad.
• Scholarship exhibits by the students and faculty will be displayed in the Beach Music Hall rotunda and the King Hall lobby from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• At 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., a production will be held in the planetarium.
• At 7 p.m., a panel in the Flint Hills Room will discuss the future of ESU.
Thursday
• At 9 a.m. a tour will be given of the Center for Early Childhood Education, beginning at the south door of the Butcher Education Center.
• From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be a number of presentations at the Skillett Atrium in Visser Hall, including poster presentations, a health assessment, art therapy and a rat maze demonstration. In addition, the National Teachers Hall of Fame Museum in Room 115 of Visser Hall will be open.
• At 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. will be a tour of the professional development school, beginning at Skillett Atrium.
• At 12:15 p.m. will be a tour of the campus’s one-room schoolhouse.
• A “Business After Hours” will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sauder Alumni Center.
Friday
• A student parade down Commercial Street will be held at noon.
• A student involvement fair will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kellogg Circle, with entertainment, activities and stations representing several of the ESU student groups and organizations.
• A free gala concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall, with a reception afterward in the rotunda.
Saturday
• A continental breakfast will be held from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union’s “Main Street.”
• Campus tours will be given from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. beginning at Main Street in the union.
• The Kansas Business Hall of Fame and the Sherrer Leadership Room, in Cremer Hall rooms 205 and 206, will be open from 9 a.m. until noon.
