Mellies named outstanding apprentice

Craig Mellies of Emporia was selected outstanding apprentice of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker’s Local 226 class of 2007, according to the Local 226 newsletter for March. Mellies competed in code, theory and practical wiring transformers and motor controls.

He now is eligible to compete in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker’s Seventh District Contest at the Topeka Holidome on March 31. He will graduate in May.

Mellies is the son of Steve and Mary Ann Sanford of Emporia and Greg Mellies of Kansas City.

Card shower requested

Egg hunt

Neosho Rapids Community Projects and Neosho Rapids Lions Club are sponsors of the 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt beginning at 11 a.m. April 7 on the east side of the community building. There will be four age divisions at the hunt: 1-3, 4-6, 7-10 and 11-12. Children wearing a homemade Easter hat, bonnet or cap may enter the contest. Prizes will be awarded. Salute to veterans

The Leavenworth National Cemetery and “Bugles Across America” are sponsoring a salute to the veterans at 11 a.m. May 19 (Armed Forces Day) at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Fort Leavenworth National cemetery and Fort Scott National Cemetery. The National Cemetery is looking for volunteers to play “Taps” for the salute.

The news release said that all brass instrument players may volunteer for the program, along with school bands or any other musical associations.

Special screening

The Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative is offering a free screening for individuals from birth to 21 years who may have potential learning problems.

People who have concerns about their child’s walking, talking, seeing, hearing or learning may call to schedule a free appointment. The staff will assist people in identification with special needs and services.

The “Count Your Kid In” screening will be held April 4 at the Mary Herbert building, 1700 W. Seventh Ave. For an appointment, call 341-2326.

Training re-scheduled

An education and training event for Community Service Advisor Volunteers in Emporia has been re-scheduled for Friday, April 27 at the Lyon County Courthouse Annex, 430 Commercial St. The event is sponsored by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging.

It will begin with coffee and registration from 9 to 9:30 a.m. “Communities in Full Bloom,” which will discuss the role of service volunteers, will be presented from 10 to 10:45 a.m. “Where to Plant,” from 11 to 11:45 a.m., will identify types of help and services that volunteers could give.

Lunch will be served on site from 1-2 p.m.

“Own your Future,” scheduled at 2 p.m., will discuss planning for long-term care. “Search for the Hidden,” from 2 to 2:15 p.m., will focus on low-income subsidy for Medicare Part D recipients.

Michael McNulty from the Kansas Department on Health and Environment, will present “Emergency Preparedness Plans — Are You Ready? from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.

Questions will be answered after each workshop session.

The training is open to the public at no charge. Lunch will be served on-site.

North school board meeting cancelled

The Monday meeting of the North Lyon County Board of Education has been cancelled.

The first meeting between the school board’s negotiation team and the North Lyon County Teachers Association has been scheduled for Monday at 4:15 p.m. in the board meeting room in Americus.
