Stueve earns all-American status

Thursday, March 22, 2007

For the second consecutive season, Emporia State’s Michelle Stueve has earned Kodak/WBCA All-American honors.

The Olpe native is the first Lady Hornet ever to gain that distinction two years in a row. She is one of only two repeat selections on the team.

Stueve led the MIAA in scoring and rebounding this year, averaging 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She earned MIAA player of the week four times and was a unanimous all-MIAA pick for the second straight season.

The forward actually upped her numbers in the conference season, averaging 18.9 points and 9.7 rebounds. She was one of four juniors selected to the 10-person All-American team.

“Michelle obviously had a great year. Any time you average basically a double-double in MIAA play, I think that tells the caliber of player you are,” ESU coach Brandon Schneider said. “I didn’t think it came quite as easy for her this year because she went through some stretches where she didn’t shoot the ball as well as she would like, but I think that really helped her to become a better player.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to have another year with her.”

Stueve is fourth in ESU career scoring with 1,729 points and seventh in rebounding with 771 boards. She became the school’s leader in 3-pointers made this season with 199 total in her career.

She also has excelled in the classroom, as she is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District performer. She has been named Academic All-MIAA as well as to the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

Selection committees in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions choose the top 10 players for the Kodak All-American list.

Stueve is joined on the team by Missouri Western’s Inga Buzoka, who was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player this season. The MIAA was the only conference with two Kodak All-Americans.
