April Huddleston was the heroine for Emporia State Wednesday night, delivering a two-run single to break a scoreless tie as the Hornets defeated Nebraska-Omaha, 2-0, in 10 innings in Omaha.
With the score still tied after the ninth inning, the two teams implemented the International Tiebreaker rule, where a runner is placed on second base to start the inning for both teams.
Huddleston took advantage, as with runners on second and third and one out in the 10th, she sent a single to center for her second hit and a pair of RBI.
ESU pitcher Courtney Reed allowed a hit but not a run in the UNO half of the 10th to finish up her shutout.
Reed went all 10 innings for the Hornets, striking out eight while scattering six hits. She walked just one batter.
The ESU pitching staff now has not allowed a run in its last 33 innings pitched.
The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain with the score tied at 3, meaning the scoreless streak still remains intact.
Huddleston went 2-for-4, contributing half of the Hornets’ hits. Chelsea McClernon and Jessie Wiard had the other singles.
ESU has now won its last four games and 13 of its last 14.
