A Burlington woman and a Wisconsin man will each spend time in prison as a result of their convictions in Coffey County. They were sentenced on Friday by District Court Judge Phillip M. Fromme.
Luann L. Freeman, 26, of Burlington will serve a 22-month sentence as a result of her February conviction for aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer.
Coffey County Attorney Doug Witteman filed charges following Freeman’s arrest in July. Witteman said that a Burlington police officer was questioning Freeman when she became unruly and had to be restrained. A scuffle ensued and Freeman reached into the officer’s holster and fired his handgun. The bullet struck the ground near the officer’s foot. The incident was investigated by the Coffey County Sheriff’s Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Damon J. Greer, 29, of LaCrosse, Wis., was sentenced to serve a controlling term of 31 months in prison as a result of his Jan. 18 conviction for conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana.
Witteman said that Greer was arrested last May following a routine traffic stop conducted by a Coffey County Deputy along Interstate 35 near Lebo. Witteman said that during the stop, the deputy’s suspicions were raised and a search of the vehicle yielded seven pounds of packaged marijuana. The investigation revealed that the marijuana was being taken from Oklahoma City to Wisconsin for sale. Officers also seized $3,000 from Greer.
