After interviewing at Division-I Denver University on Monday, Emporia State men’s basketball coach David Moe has not been chosen as its new basketball coach.

“From what I understand, they’re announcing a coach (today), and it’s not me,” Moe said by phone Tuesday night.

Moe confirmed that he interviewed for the position on Monday with Denver athletic director Peg Bradley-Doppes.

“I would have thought I had a chance at it,” Moe said, “but they went with someone else.”

The Denver Post reported this morning that Princeton coach Joe Scott — who led Air Force to the 2004 NCAA Tournament — will be announced as the new Denver men’s basketball coach today.

According to the article, Rice coach Willis Wilson and Moe were the only others interviewed for the position.

Moe was an assistant at the University of Colorado for seven seasons (1993-2001) and played high school basketball at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colo.

In Tuesday’s Denver Post, Moe said he felt he would be a “good fit” at Denver. His father, Doug, is an assistant coach for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets.

“My years at the University of Colorado, then going on to Emporia, have set me up for a job like this,” Moe told the Post on Tuesday. “I’m highly interested.”

“If there was a job I think I’d be prepared for, it’s the University of Denver,” he later said. “I still have ties with high school coaches here, having recruited so many kids from this state. And, of course, I’ve got lots of ties in the area.”

The 42-year-old Moe led ESU to a 21-8 year this season, helping the Hornets to their second appearance ever in the NCAA Tournament. He is 101-70 overall in his six seasons at ESU.
