Menu expands recall list

Sunday, March 18, 2007

Menu Foods has added a few brands to its pet food recall, bringing the total to 40 cat food labels and 48 dog food labels.

The initial list, released Saturday morning, had 37 cat food brands and 46 brands of dog food. For a detailed list of which products within each brand are affected, see the company's Web site at http://www.menufoods.com/recall

According to The Associated Press, about 10 pets have died and an unknown number have suffered kidney failure after eating the affected food. The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches sold between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was produced at the Emporia plant and another plant in Pennsauken, N.J.

Janet Brown of the Commercial Street Reeble's Country Mart said she had found 10 cans of Best Choice beef cuts and gravy that were on the list. The cans have been pulled from the shelves. That product comes in a 13.2 ounce can and would have a date stamped on the bottom that is between Dec. 20 and Dec. 22 of 2009.

Brown said the cans can be brought back to the store for fulll credit.

Nancy Garcia, the assistant manager of the Merchant Street Reeble's, said that none of the recalled products were found at her store.

Store managers were not available at Dillons or Price Chopper on Sunday. Wal-Mart referred calls to its corporate office, which were not immediately returned Sunday.

The list of affected brands is included below. Please see the company's Web site for product details, including the specific product, product code and date of production. Products not identified on the Web site can continue to be used, the company said on the site.

Please note despite not being on the list that Purina is voluntarily going along with Menu's recall regarding Mighty Dog pouches for dogs. Look up Nestle Purina and look for its statement on its website.
Science Diet is part of Hill's.
Sophisticat is a label of Fancy Feast.
