Organizers are looking for more vendors at the Eighth Annual “Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale.”
Known as the nation’s largest garage sale, the event will be May 18 to 20. It crosses 12 states and bring out thousands of bargain hunters annually, according to a news release
The sale was founded in Indiana in 2000. Tom Taylor, organizer of the event, said participation is strong in Nevada, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio and West Virginia.
“We are hoping this year to expand in California, Utah, Kansas, Missouri, Virginia and Maryland,” Taylor said.
U.S. 50 is one of the old national roads and runs from Sacramento, Calif., to Ocean City, Md.
The U.S. 50 Yard Sale is coordinated through the Web site www.route50.com, but the focus is on local promotion.
“The vast majority of our participants are individuals setting up on private property along U.S. 50,” Taylor said.
“It would be impossible to ever provide a map to all the sales as we annually have several hundred in our small county alone.”
Taylor said he is looking for local coordinators to help with local publicity.
“We have found that the primary need for the success of the sale is have someone in each community who is willing to put up a few flyers and help get the word out,” he said.
