EHS wins 15 events in 1st meet

The Emporia High track team opened its season with plenty of top performances Thursday at the Shawnee Heights Early Bird Relays.

In all, the girls squad took nine first-place performances while the EHS boys came away with six first-place finishes.

Samantha Kraft, Raelynn Pearson and Leslie Stanbrough all came away with two titles apiece for the Spartan girls.

Kraft won both the pole vault with a final clearance of 7 feet, and the long jump, with a distance of 14 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Pearson won the shot put and the discus, throwing the shot 30 feet, 4 1/2 inches and the disc 102 feet.

Stanbrough finished first in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.75 seconds and in the 300 low hurdles in a time of 52.87 seconds.

Emporia’s relay teams took three titles as well, winning the 4x800, the 4x200 and the 4x400 races.

Kira Douglas finished second in the javelin and Lindy Arndt came in second in the high jump.

On the boys side, Caydrick Bloomquist got the day started for the Spartans with a first-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet, 6 inches.

Also in the field events, Eric Dorsey took the discus title with a throw of 150 feet, 1 inch, while Brandon Childs won the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet, 10 inches.

Dorsey and Childs each came away with a second-place finish, as Dorsey was the runner-up in the shot put (45 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and Childs finished second in the high jump (6 feet).

Three of Emporia’s relay teams finished first: the 4-mile relay (20 minutes, 6 seconds), the distance medley relay (11:59) and the 4x400 (3:39).

Lavatris Roberson came in second in the long jump (18 feet, 3 1/4) and Eric Wells placed third in the javelin (156 feet, 2 inches).
