Food and Shelter grant
The Lyon County Emergency Food and Shelter program is getting $3,742 from the Kansas Set-Aside Committee. The United Way of the Flint Hills was recently notified of the award by the Emergency Food and Shelter national board.
The money is in addition to the $19,556 that was allocated earlier this year as part of “Phase 25.”
The Lyon County Emergency Food and Shelter board will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Amend Girl Scout Center at 12th Avenue and Burlingame Road. Requests will be heard and allocations made at the meeting. Organizations that provide emergency food or shelter to people in Lyon County may apply before the meeting.
Allocations will be administered by the United Way of the Flint Hills. For more information, contact the United Way at 342-7564.
Subs for the train
An Emporia sandwich shop has volunteered to donate 15 percent of its sales on Thursday to the fundraising effort for The Little Train in Soden’s Grove.
Planet Sub will make the donation based on sales throughout the day, according to Sertoma Club member Terri Summey. Members will work tables and refill drinks during busy times at the restaurant that day.
The money will be added to a fund created originally to replace the diesel engine and driver motors on the 48-year-old train, which was not expected to run through the summer.
