Free landfill days

Free landfill days will be sponsored by the City of Emporia /Lyon County Transfer Station from Saturday, April 28 through May 13.

Residents of Chase and Lyon Counties will be allowed two “free trips” which are restricted to residential use only.  Commercial and industrial businesses are not eligible. Disposal of tires will be charged at the normal rate and will not be accepted free of charge.

For a “free trip” to the landfill, an individual’s April 2007 electric bill must be shown to the gate attendant before entry. The City of Emporia/Lyon County Transfer Station is located at 3100 West South Avenue. The summer hours are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, 1 -5 p.m.

 Angel Food ministries

Angel Food orders may be picked up on Saturday, March 17, 1 -3 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church, 561 Broadway.  Informational flyers may be found at various businesses around town. 

 Americus Chamber of Commerce

A Sesquicentennial celebration will be held each month during the remainder of the year. The celebrations will be held on the first Saturday of each month, 12-1 p.m., in the USD 251 meeting room. There are three exceptions: Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, July 15, will be in the City Park, and the October meeting will be on the second Saturday. The Chamber of Commerce will furnish the entree and guests are asked to bring related side dishes and their own tableware. The first celebration will be Saturday, April 7, 12 noon-1 p.m., in the USD 251 meeting room and the theme is “50’s food” with a tuna casserole furnished. Guests are asked to bring 50’s style food and their own tableware. The Americus Township Library has located a 50’s cookbook for hints on recipes to use.

 Antique power

The Flint Hills Antique Power Association will have several tractors in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Emporia on Saturday. Owners of John Deere, Olivers and Hart Parr tractors are looking forward to driving green tractors on a this special day.

 Biscuits and gravy

The Americus Masonic Lodge members wll serve biscuits and gravy on April 14 to continue their fund raising to cover building costs.
