Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work.

The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

CHARLES ROEMER who received his Eagle Scout Award. His service project was to design and build cabinets and shelves for the theater department at Emporia High School.

• Matt Zimmerman, who accepted the position of Emporia’s new city manager. He will be moving to Emporia from Prospect Heights, Ill.

• Newman Regional Health, which celebrated 85 years of service to Lyon County.

• ESU men’s and women’s basketball teams who will compete in the NCAA tournament.

• The Olpe High boys and girls basketball teams, who are competing in the state tournament.

• Jan Jantzen who will have the “Today Show” film his prairie burning workshop on April 21. To reserve your seat and have a chance to be on television call 342-2625.

• The Flint Hills, which are getting some national publicity. National Geographic has a 22 page story on the Flint Hills in the April issue. Public Television will also have a documentary on the Flint Hills, which will air on April 29.

• Kenny Walburn and Charlie McKenzie, who are opening a new athletic club in Madison.

• Marilyn McComber, who was inducted as a Kansas Master Teacher. Tes Mehring received a special master teacher award during the ceremony.
