MADISON — The town of Madison will soon have its own gym where people can go work out.
Kenny Walburn, owner of Walburn’s Gym in Emporia, said he and a friend from Americus, Charlie McKenzie, decided to open a gym in Madison, which will be located downtown on Main Street. The gym, which will be called Madison Athletic Club, is scheduled to open on Monday, Walburn said.
“It’s going to be Walburn Gym style,” Walburn said. “It’s a much smaller location, but we’re going to implement everything we’ve done here (in Emporia).”
Walburn, who founded the gym in Emporia 30 years ago, said he and McKenzie decided to open the gym because they kept getting requests for one in that area.
“People wanted us to open one there,” he said. “We decided to purchase a small building and go from there.”
Walburn said Madison Athletic Club will have a full range of exercise equipment and he plans on having one seminar a month at the gym.
“It will be full equipment in a small-town gym,” Walburn said.
Walburn said there has been a lot of community interest in the gym.
“I’m excited that we have so many people over 50 excited about it,” he said. “I think it will be fun. It will be enjoyable.”
To help promote the gym, free personal training will be offered for new members. Staff will be available to help members during business hours, Walburn said. Membership prices will start out around $23.40 a month. Tentative hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
