Fire destroyed a large pole barn filled with old cars Tuesday afternoon in the 2300 block of East Sixth Avenue
The burning cars and tires created billowing black smoke that could be seen for miles and brought sightseers to the area to watch, until Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and diverted unnecessary traffic away from the blaze.
Emergency medical technicians attended to a man at the scene who was experiencing difficulties not directly related to the fire.
City fire trucks, Lyon County pumper trucks, ambulances, administration vehicles, and firefighters from Fire Districts 4 and 5 converged to fight the fire and to shuttle water to the pumper trucks.
Grass had been burned across a broad area that stretched from the Church of the New Covenant nearby, across a retention pond and on to a two-level house north of the church. Small fires burned brush and trees north of the shed, extending to near Highway 50 north of the property.
