Butler honors
Lindsay Craig of Emporia was among 31 students inducted into the Alpha Phi Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Butler Community College on Feb. 25.
Established in 1918 by two-year college presidents, Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges around the world. The Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming. Students must rank in the top 10 percent of the class to be invited to membership at Phi Theta Kappa and must maintain high academic standing during their enrollment in the two-year college.
The Alpha Phi Alpha chapter was chartered at Butler Community College in 2001. Instructors Susan Forrest and Mark Jarvis are advisors.
Tour of duty
Army Capt. Katherine J. Baker has arrived for duty at Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Baker, an assistant operations officer with eight years of military service, is the daughter-in-law of Robert and Kathy Reust of Allen. She is the daughter of John C. and Jean E. Baker of Littleton, Colo.
The captain graduated in 1996 from Chatfield Senior High School, Littleton, and received an associate degree in 1998 from New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2001 from Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos.
Wichita State grads
More than 800 students completed their degrees at Wichita State University in fall 2006. Local students Patrick Lowrance of Osage City and Karen Atterbury and Tammy Plowman, both of Emporia, were among that number. All earned bachelor’s degrees in business administration. Lowrance and Plowman earned magna cum laude honors.
Undergraduate students who have attained a grade point average of 3.9 out of a possible 4.0 received the summa cum laude award; those with an average of 3.55 received the magna cum laude award; and those with an average of 3.25 received the cum laude.
WSU honors
Local students earn distinction at Wichita State University Wichita State University has announced the names of about 1,900 students who were on the WSU dean’s honor roll for fall 2006. The list includes local students Chad Henkelman of Cottonwood Falls; Mandy Carroll of Council Grove; Jacqueline Brown, Robin Clasen and Jessica Cummings, all of Eureka; and Elizabeth Armour of Olpe.
To be included on the dean’s honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
