Burlington
The Burlington City Council accepted two resignations when it met Feb. 21. Calvin Freeman resigned from the Burlington Planning Board Bruce Murray submitted a letter of resignation from the City Council. Council members accepted both resignations.
The Coffey County Commission met Feb. 22 to interview two candidates for the county engineer position. A third candidate was interviewed on Monday. County Engineer Hub Casper will retire at the end of May. The board recessed into a 30-minute executive session with the first candidate, Mark Hurt of Lawrence. The commissioners held two executive sessions for a total of 50 minutes with the second candidate, John Gough of Topeka. On Monday afternoon, the board interviewed a third candidate, Marion Wayne Blackbourn of Walnut.
Council Grove
An ordinance establishing new court costs in municipal court cases was approved during Monday evening’s City Council meeting. The new ordinance raises the docketing fee from $54 to $66. New fees are: warrant fee, $50; expungement fee, $20; video/DVD fee in response to discovery, $20; and insurance company records, $10.
Marion County
Two Marion County servicemen were wounded in action in Iraq this past week. Specialist Simon Makovec, 22, of Ramona and Specialist Peter Richert, 23, of Hillsboro were among those wounded by shrapnel following an attack by an improvised explosive device near Baghdad. Makovec was treated and released for minor shrapnel wounds to his legs. Richert lost a leg as a result of the attack and remains hospitalized.
