Time to register again

Friday, March 2, 2007

If you like getting sales calls at dinnertime, ignore this story. Otherwise, it’s time to sign up for some quiet again.

Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison said Thursday that it was time to sign up again for the national no-call list, which protects homes from unsolicited telemarketing. The original list went into effect in 2002, but everyone with a phone number on the list has to re-register every five years.

“Many consumers are very concerned about unsolicited phone calls and telemarketing,” Morrison said Thursday in a press release. “In order to continue to avoid these calls, Kansans must re-register every five years.”

To register online, go to the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov and follow the instructions. When you are finished, an e-mail will be sent to you with a link — click the link to activate the registration.

Kansans may also call 1-888-382-1222 to have their number put on the list, but they must call from the number they wish to register. TTY users can call 1-866-290-4236.

The list is also open to those registering for the first time. Both residential and cell phone numbers can be registered. There is no charge.

The list will not block calls for charitable organizations, political candidates or non-profit issues. It also will not block calls if you have authorized a company to call you or done business with the company in the last 36 months.

Business numbers may not be registered. A phone number must be re-registered if it changes ownership.

Those wanting more information on the Kansas No-Call Act or wishing to make a complaint about an illegal sales call may go to www.ksag.org/no-call.
