Girls State

Applications are being accepted for the 65th annual session of Sunflower Girls State to be held June 3-8 at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. American Legion Auxiliary, Ball-McColm Unit #5, sponsors participants, and there is no cost to the girls. It is open to those now completing their junior year of high school.

They will join approximately 425 other young women in learning Kansas government by participating. They will register to vote, file nomination papers, conduct political campaigns, and make speeches. The girls will live in Ellsworth Hall on campus.

Speakers will share their expertise with the girls, who will be able to ask questions. Speakers will include: Gov. Kathleen Sebelius; Ron Thornburgh, Secretary of State; Gwen Trost, Department President of the American Legion Auxiliary; and other state, county and city officials.

Walk for the

‘Mind of America’

An informational meeting about “Walk for the Mind of America” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Emporia Public Library.

The meeting is sponsored by the Kansas chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

NAMI advocates for the mentally ill, provides support for families and peers, and disseminates information, referrals and educational materials.
