Emporia Business to Help Send Packages to Iraq

Friday, June 29, 2007

Owners of the Wagon Wheel Grill and Bar have volunteered to help in the drive to send freezer pops and other needed items to injured troops and children hospitalized in Balad, Iraq.

Master Sgt. Sherry Hertlein of Emporia, who is stationed as a medical technician in Balad, said that the freezer pops are especially needed as a treat for patients in the extreme desert heat. The hospital is housed in tents and is not air conditioned. The temperature in Balud on Wednesday was 123 degrees Fahrenheit.

Brenda Barrett, who owns the Wagon Wheel with her husband, Mike, said that people who want to send items to Iraq may bring them to the business at 2909 W. Ninth Ave.

“We’ll take care of mailing it,” Barrett said.

Hertlein said that other items needed are pillows, toys for the injured children, books, magazines and hand-held video games.

The items can be sent to Balad in U.S. Postal Service flat-rate priority mail boxes at a cost of $8.95 to send anywhere in the world. The boxes are free of charge and come in two sizes, 11”x13”x3” and 8.5”x11”x6”.

A post office representative said this morning that a number of the flat-rate boxes have been picked up but no information was available about whether the boxes had been returned to be mailed.

The shipping address is:
