Several members of the Emporia Track Club have qualified for the Region 9 USATF Junior Olympic championships to be held in Edwardsville, Ill., on July 12-15.
To qualify for Region 9, athletes must place in the top 6 at the Association meet, which was held June 15-16 at UMKC in Kansas City, Mo. The top 3 at Region 9 qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympics to be held in Walnut, Calif., on July 24-29.
John Williams took first in the Bantam Boys division in the high jump with a clearance of 4 feet, 1 inch, and also qualified with second-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (15.34 seconds) and the long jump.
In the Youth Girls division, Callie Clark took second in both the long jump (12-5) and the 400-meter dash (1:04.46), while also placing seventh in the 200 in a time of 29.66 seconds.
Leslie Stanbrough picked up a pair of runner-up finishes with a javelin toss of 103-4 and a time of 1:18.96 in the 400-meter hurdles. In addition to competing in those two events individually at the Region 9 championships, Stanbrough also will compete in the heptathlon.
In the Young Men division, the ETC saw three of its athletes pick up first-place finishes.
Brandon Childs won the high jump with a leap of 6-4, Asher Delmott took first in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:46.78 and 2007 Class 5A State champion Jacob Davies won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.31.
Delmott also finished second in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:53, and Kale Hamm finished behind Childs in the high jump with a final clearance of 6 feet.
Andrew Wayman will compete in the steeplechase at the Region 9 championships.
Also, Davies (800 meters), Childs (high jump), Michaela Reynolds (2,000-meter steeplechase) and Wayman (2,000-meter steeplechase) have met qualifying standards and will compete in the USATF Youth National meet in Lisle, Ill., on July 2-7.
