Host families needed

for tournament

Host families are still needed for the week when the Emporia 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team plays host to the State Tournament of Champions, July 20-25.

As teams are eliminated from the tournament, so are host families relieved of their responsibilities.

Jaguar Volleyball

Camp 2006

Applications are now being accepted for the Jaguar Volleyball Camp 2006, which takes place July 23-27 and will be instructed by Hartford coaches Paul Cassity and Yvonne Gardner.

There will be three sessions, all of which will be in the Hartford High School gymnasium. Session I will be for grades 6-8 and will be from 8-10:30 a.m. each day, Session II will be for grades 4-5 and will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day and Session III will be for grades 9-12 and will be from 6-8:30 p.m. each day.

There is a $20 fee for the camp, which includes instruction, T-shirt, prizes and refreshments. The deadline to register is July 5. Mail registration to Paul Cassity, 603 Mechanic, Hartford, KS 66854.

Jaguar Basketball

Camp 2006

Applications are now being accepted for the Jaguar Basketball Camp 2006, which take place July 16-20 and will be instructed by Hartford coaches Chuck Ewy and Patrick Gardner.

There will be three sessions, all of which will be in the Hartford High School gymnasium. Session I will be for grades 4-5 and will be from 8-10 a.m. each day, Session II will be for grades 6-8 and will take place from 10 a.m. to noon each day and Session III will be for grades 9-12 and will be from 6-8 p.m. each day.

Lady Spartan Summer Basketball Camp

The Lady Spartan Summer Basketball Camps will be accepting entry forms from now until July 2. Camp for girls K-2nd grade will be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on July 16-19. Cost is $40. The 3rd-5th grade camp will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on July 16-19. Cost is $45. The 6th-8th grade camp will be 10-11:30 a.m. on July 9-13. Cost is $50.

All campers will receive a T-shirt.

Forms are available at Emporia High School, Mike’s Sporting Goods, Jock’s Nitch and at other area schools.

Junior Golf Camp

and Ladies’ Clinic

A Junior Golf Camp for kids age 7 to 17 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 17-19 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. The camp will be conducted by Ken Roper, life member of the PGA. Cost is $50.

A Ladies’ Clinic will be held by Roper at 6 p.m. on June 24 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Cost is $15 per Sunday session.

Olpe Little Eagle

Basketball Camp

The Olpe Little Eagle Basketball Camp for girls and boys from kindergarten through third grade will take place from 10:30 a.m. through noon July 9-11 at Olpe High School. Cost is $35, and each child will receive a basketball with enrollment fee.

Camp instruction will introduce the correct individual fundamental skills of basketball in a non-competitive environment. Among the coaches will be Olpe head coach Jesse Nelson, current Lady Eagle players and also Emporia State All-American Michelle Stueve.

Deadline for registration is June 30.

Camp of Champions

Basketball Camps

Emporia State head women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider will be conducting one more Camp of Champions basketball camps for both girls and boys grades kindergarten-12 this summer. ESU assistants Ali Sprague and Jory Collins, as well as ESU players and local high school and junior college coaches also will be coaching at the camp.

The camp will be held in Holton on July 16-18. The cost of the camp in Holton is $100. Fees include instruction, camp basketball, camp T-shirt and secondary accident insurance.

The camp schedule begins with registration from 8:30-9 a.m. on the first day of each session. Then, from 9 a.m. to noon, campers will be taught individual instruction with ball handling, shooting, fundamentals and defense. After an hour lunch break, campers will return for more individual instruction plus shooting competitions and 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games from 1-4 p.m.

Applications for Holton are due on July 6.

Summer Spartans

Wrestling Instruction

Emporia High wrestling coach Greg Buckbee’s Summer Spartans Wrestling Instruction camps have started. Come learn the technique and attitude that has made EHS a perennial power in Kansas.

Throughout the summer, participants will learn from the Emporia High coaching staff and EHS alumni, with current Emporia High wrestlers on hand for the younger wrestlers.

There will be 10-12 sessions throughout the summer in the Emporia High School wrestling room mostly on Tuesday nights.

Grades 1-6 (as of fall 2007) will be from 6-7:30 p.m. For USD 253 students, the cost is $25, and for non-USD 253 students, $40. Grades 7-12 (as of fall 2007) will be from 7:30-9 p.m. For USD 253 students, the cost is $10, and for non-USD 253 students, $25.

Emporia Aquatic Club summer season

The summer swim season for the Emporia Aquatic Club began Tuesday at the Jones Aquatic Center pool. The highlight of the season will be a meet in Emporia on July 14-15.

The Emporia Aquatic Club is a multi-age group to help swimmers develop and refine their competitive swimming skills. Morning practices will be held from 7-8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and evening practices will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Track Club seeking

interested athletes

The Emporia Track Club is a non-profit organization that provides track and field/running opportunities for all ages with an emphasis on youth. The focus is on instructional learning and enjoyment of the sport. The Emporia Track Club sponsors youth meets in track and field and cross country, fun runs and conducts youth clinics. The track club also has competitors travel to regional and national meets to compete successfully at the highest level.

Designed for competitive athletes who desire to compete in out-of-town USATF competition, the club is open to grades 1-12 at the middle school track. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. for grades 1-8, and for grades 9-12, the club will practice Monday through Thursday at 7 p.m. on the middle school track.
