Sarah Prieb is shown just weeks before her May graduation from Flint Hills Technical College. On Monday, her body was found at Lake Kahola. Officials say it looks as if Prieb killed herself.

The body of a 20-year-old Marion County woman, formerly a student in Emporia, was discovered Monday evening near the spillway at Lake Kahola.

The woman, identified as Sarah J. Prieb, is believed to have died Monday.

Morris County Sheriff Scott Coover said that the death seemed to be a suicide, after the initial investigation.

“We have no witnesses to the actual event,” Coover said. “We’re still doing some investigation on it, of course.”

Her body was taken to Topeka, where an autopsy was to have been performed on Tuesday. The results of the autopsy are not yet available.

Coover said that the young woman’s body was discovered by a maintenance worker at the lake, who noticed a private vehicle setting in an area where a vehicle would not ordinarily be parked.

“Eventually, going down, he found her,” Coover said.

Morris County authorities were called to the scene at 9:33 p.m. Monday.

Prieb graduated in May from the Flint Hills Technical College with an associate’s degree in commercial art.

“She was a student senator — always professional, outgoing,” said Eric Tincher, director of enrollment management and placement. “Student Senate meets a minimum of once a month to try to better the college.”

Tincher remembered Prieb as a “very talented” young woman who often volunteered to be part of different events and activities.

She received a scholarship from the FHTC Foundation and was one of the students featured in a Gazette story about FHTC graduates this year. Prieb then was looking forward to a summer job as art director at Camp Wood YMCA outside Elmdale and moving later to Gardner to work in the Kansas City area.

“She was a joy to have as a student,” Tincher said. “We are very saddened by this loss.”
