Good for the RDA

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

THE EMPORIA Area Chamber of Commerce works every day to help create an environment for business and community success. Recently, Emporia has experienced a run of success with economic development.

The announcements of the Westar peaking plant, REG biodiesel plant, and the Hill’s Pet Food plant bode well for the continued growth of Emporia.

All of these projects will offer good employment opportunities for workers, and send a strong signal that Emporia continues to be one of the best places in Kansas to locate a business. These announcements can be attributed to the hard work the RDA does to ensure Emporia is ready for future business growth and expansions of current businesses. RDA works as the point group on all industrial development in Lyon County, which gives prospects one contact to discuss the implications of locating a business in the area.

Having one focal group is an advantage Emporia holds over other areas in the state. The RDA also speaks as the one voice of business and government groups in Emporia. The Chamber is proud of the work RDA does, and wishes to congratulate its leaders for the recent success. The future in Emporia is much brighter as a result of the efforts of the RDA. As we say at the Chamber: “It’s a great day in Emporia!”

Do you have to complain about everything positive that happens in Emporia.

Dave,
Seriously - if everything that happens here is so bad, why are you still living here? Either do something (run for an office) to fix what you think is broken or stop complaining. I know you said you wouldn't run because you have so much family here that it wouldn't be a "fair" election - well that's a convenient excuse, so why don't you prove it? Apparently your family has that much power in this town to swing an election, then why can't you get things changed? When you lose I'd be curious what your excuse would be then - maybe that you forced your family not to vote for you and that in turn changed an entire election. You sound a little full of yourself to make an assumption like that.

You have no idea how many people in this town are relatives. But, I will tell you this, my name is my name!! Yes, I am very much trying to leave here, but have you talked with any realators of late as to how the housing market is going here. And if you are so perfect and know all why are you using a false name and why do you not run. You must be one of the crooked people running this town already, otherwise the things I say and talk about would not hit such nerves with you. So far, all I have gotten from you are bad remarks and snide remarks about me. This forum is not to attack but to discuss. But if you make me angry I will come back at you and I am sure other people share my feelings.

Dave, What do you do for a job? I'm curious since you said you are your own boss. Real Estate is selling in less you over price your house or have not taken care of it. Your name is your name then why isn't it in the phone book :) Good Luck Dave I hope you can sell your house and move out of town.

I've told daveedailey the same thing about running for office. Maybe he could fix the place.

But, he's cashing in if he can sell his house, so that probably means Emporia and Lyon county are doomed.

If he really wants to leave, I wish him well. If he reconsiders and runs for office I'll vote for him on the contrarian ticket just for the amusement.

I've seen that he doesn't like having Somalis around, or Mexicans. He thinks every politician is a crook or liar, and says that any time someone says something to him in response they're attacking him. He complains about others using anonymity while he uses it as a cloak for himself so that he can attack everyone who doesn't agree with him.

All in all, I'd say he's just what Emporia needs.

It takes a very narrow view to crow about the successes without seeing it in light of the dramatic failures.

What is the NET change in the job market here, with so many businesses dying? How many LOCAL people are being hired for these plants and businesses?

The Westar plant will operate seasonally, with a staff of what--less than ten? How many jobs evaporated when Didde closed? When Modine closed? Dillons West? Food 4 Less? Cracker Barrel?

Sure, bringing in new jobs with new people in them adds to the local property tax base (probably), but it doesn't replace a job lost from a previous company evaporation. If Emporia is truely GROWING, especially when compared to similar towns elsewhere, then let's see the raw statistics on paper.

I suspect that Walgreens has done more for job growth than the peaking plant ever will.

Let's see the actual stats, Gazette. How many jobs have been eliminated in the past ten years versus how many jobs created? Is Emporia really growing, or is it barely hanging on?

I work at a local business and in the month of June alone we have lost 6 professionals who chose to move out of Emporia. It will not be easy replacing these jobs. 3 rented and 3 are trying to sell their well kept homes without any luck.

Dave,
My not agreeing with your view does not mean I am attacking you. I'm basically saying, put up or shut up. I never claimed to be perfect or know the perfect solution, but I know that simply complaining about everything and not DOING anything sure doesn't help or make for a happy life. So a person has to be personally involved to feel passionate about something? Well to answer your question, no, I am not a politician, but I think I am allowed to feel strongly about any subject I want to - that would be my right, so perhaps you shouldn't jump to conclusions.
