First Christian to be part of sesquicentennial

The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will have a float in the July 4 parade to celebrate the church’s 150th anniversary. The church is believed to be the first church in Lyon County. Members will operate a booth at Seventh Avenue and Mechanic Street with historical and current information about the church.

Barbershop harmony

A host of barbershop quartets will perform beginning at 8 p.m. Friday in Beach Music Hall on the Emporia State University campus. The show is sponsored by the Emporia Flint Hills Barbershop Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, formerly S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Tickets, $15 each or $20 for two, may be purchased at the door or at Winter Furniture, 709 Commercial St.

Those performing will be the ESU quartet, 4th Gear; Mighty Fine, from Topeka and Kansas City; WU, from Wichita and Hutchinson; Escape, from Leavenworth and Kansas City; Sound Alliance, from Wichita; and The Noise Boys from St. Joseph, Mo., Springfield, Mo., and Tulsa. On July 4, The Noise Boys will compete at the International Barbershop Convention in Denver. They are rated in the top 20 of 49 competitors.

According to a news release from Emporia chapter president Dick Winter, “it has been a number of years since Emporia has had a barbershop show, so it is a real thrill to be doing it this year.”
