Things are about to start popping in Emporia again.
On Wednesday, fireworks will go on sale in Emporia and remain available through the Fourth. Five tents are setting up shop — three at the Americus Road and U.S. Highway 50, a fourth just down the road at the Emporia RV Park and Campground and the last one just a short distance south of the Prairie Street overpass.
The fireworks stands are:
Kaboomers
Run by: Jamie and Angela Bonnema
Location: Just north of U.S. 50 on Americus Road
Hours: 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
Boomtown
Run by: Marty Barber of Pittsburg
Location: Just north of U.S. 50 on Americus Road.
Hours: Usually 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
JC Freedom
Run by: Julie Young and Carol Lang
Location: Emporia RV Park & Campground, 4601 W. U.S. 50.
Hours of operation: Roughly 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., depending on customer traffic.
T-N-T Fireworks
Run by: First United Methodist Youth
Location: South of the Prairie Street bridge, across the street from the Lyon County Highway Department
Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until July 2 and then 10 a.m. to midnight July 3 and 4.
Uncle Sam’s Fireworks
Run by: Eric Garrett of Lynson
Location: North of U.S. 50 on the Americus Road
Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to midnight
All of the fireworks stands are just outside the Emporia city limits. It is illegal to shoot off fireworks within the city limits.
The Kansas State Fire Marshal has provided the following list of fireworks safety tips:
• Use common sense. Among other things, that means read the instructions, don’t try to light more than one firework at once and don’t get any body parts in the way of the firework. And of course, don’t carry fireworks in your pocket. Ever.
• Pay attention to where you keep your fireworks and where you shoot them. Store them in a cool, dry place. Don’t try to shoot them off in a metal or glass container. Don’t shoot them indoors. And especially don’t shoot them on a car, under a car, on a public road, near a fireworks stand or near any place that stores gasoline — not only is that stupid, it’s illegal.
F Pay attention to who’s doing the shooting. If someone’s been drinking, don’t let them light the fuse. Don’t give fireworks to young children and keep an eye on any older kids who are lighting them.
F Stick to the legal stuff, classified as “Class C” fireworks. That especially means no cherry bombs, M-80s, bottle rockets, skyrockets or homemade fireworks.
F Remember that things can go wrong. Keep a source of water nearby in case of a fire. Wear something that protects your eyes when you light the fuse. And if the firework doesn’t go off, don’t try to re-light it — success can be painful.

You forgot the stand east of town on Road 175 (old 50) between Thorndale and U exits. He has his sign up already.

You forgot Chaffain's fireworks in Hartford, they are opening up tomorrow. I sure wish the Gazette would be more accurate in their reporting and make sure all of the stands are represented.

You also missed two others that are north of Emporia. The first one is located one mile north on Burlingame Road and proceeds go to the Riverside 4-H Club Miller, Kansas. The second one supports the North Lyon County Youth Association and is located at The Orchard. Of course these two support clubs and people in the NORTH part of the county and we just don't seem to be THAT important for recognition from reporters at the Gazette.

Wow, Emporians really know how to pick their battles by getting so ticked off that the reporter left off a few firework stands. Find something else worthy of complaining about.

Actually I think it is worth complaining about as everyone deserves the same coverage and recognition. No matter where you are located or who you are.

Maybe if your so worried about your PRECIOUS fireworks stand getting covered correctly you could write in to the gazette and tell them. Do you expect them to keep track of every last mom and pop fireworks stand in the state???

Ummm.. What about Olpe, Madison, Lebo, Chase County, Council Grove, Americus, Allen, Admire, and Neosho Rapids?
Hell... Maybe the Gazette should just run a seperate paper just to cover all the Fireworks stands in the 5 or 6 county area.
