On debate team

The Missouri State University debate team finished the year in 15th place, according to the Cross Examination Debate Association rankings.

The year ended with a trip to the association’s National Tournament in Norman, Okla. where four Missouri State teams competed in a poll of 200 two-person debate teams. Three of those four teams cleared to the first elimination round.

Sheena Walters of Emporia competed in the first round.

Money from Fort Hays

Leslie Stanbrough of Emporia accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award to Fort Hays State University for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Stanbrough, a 2007 Emporia High school graduate, was involved in track, Future Educators of America, Science Club, Latin Club, Spartan Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and All-American heptathlon and was a volunteer youth track coach and on the Principal’s Honor Roll.

She is the daughter of Mark and Wendy Stanbrough of Emporia.

Flagler graduate

Stephanie Jean Snyder of Emporia was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in sports management from Flagler college. Snyder was one of more than 300 Flagler seniors at the spring commencement. ceremony held April 21 on the college campus in St. Augustine, Fla.
